Doctor Alexander "Alex" J. Mercer[Note 1] is one of the main antagonists[Note 2] of the Prototype series. He appeared in the 181st episode of Death Battle, Cole MacGrath VS Alex Mercer, where he fought against Cole MacGrath from the inFAMOUS series.
History
The man called Alex Mercer awoke in a morgue just as he was about to be cut open by scientists with no recollection of his own memories. After an encounter with an unknown group of soldiers, Alex discovered that his body was unnaturally regenerative and that he could consume the bio-mass of others to gain their knowledge and appearance. He also learned that his home of Manhattan Island had fallen to a dreaded plague: the Blacklight Virus, which had mutated nearly everyone into horrifying monsters. With no other goal in sight, Alex decided to track down whoever was responsible for the madness, but he soon discovered the perpetrator was actually himself.
In actuality, he was the Blacklight Virus given appearance and sapience thanks to the original Alex Mercer, who was a scientist that created the virus, and recklessly unleashed it while on the run from the government, killing himself in the process. But despite the revelation, the new Alex successfully combatted the outbreak and righted his original's wrongs. But this would not last long, as Alex's attempts at living a normal life after was met with consistent hardships and betrayals. Alex began to question himself and his world, and decided that humanity needed to "evolve" into something better. This decision would set Alex down a path that would make him more of a monster than the original Alex Mercer ever was.
