And It's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Wiz at the start of every episode

Wizard, usually shortened to Wiz, is one of the two main co-hosts of Death Battle, alongside Boomstick. He was also a temporary co-host of DBX in Season 6, alongside Ringmaster, and co-hosts Death Race, alongside Boomstick.

He is a mad scientist who typically serves as a more intelligent and rational foil to Boomstick, but is also not without his erratic traits.

History

Wiz has been a mad scientist for most his life, having graduated from the Evil School of Science, though he would regret choosing an English major.[1] He avoided paying his student loans through various methods, such as a fake identity and a Dyson sphere[2], causing him to be wanted by Homeland Security to this day.[3] It is implied that Wiz's motivation for inventing things is due to a want to make his late father proud, having attempted resurrecting him multiple times.[4] Eventually, Wiz would meet Boomstick, and the duo would go on to create and host Death Battle from 2010 onward.

Appearance

Wiz is a tall and skinny individual, and his appearance very closely resembles the stereotypical "mad scientist", with his long white lab coat and messy unkempt grey hair. He wears lime-tinted glasses and wears a green t-shirt under his lab coat, which depicts a spinning rock, a visual pun on the term "Rock 'n' Roll", and has a DEATH BATTLE! skull pin on his lab coat. His left arm has been dismembered and replaced with a robotic one. Prior to his first on-screen appearance, Wizard had two robotic arms.

Personality

As one could tell by his name, Wiz is extremely intelligent and almost always keeps a cool head (though, there are somethings that can annoy/upset him, specifically Boomstick's vulgar traits). He also expresses frustration with Doomsday's origin story involving him being killed over and over again by his creator, Bertron, for 30 straight years and even threatened to remove the latter's name from the "Hall of Mad Scientists" out of sheer spite.

On the other hand, Wiz isn't exactly the most sane human being. He uses rats for genetic testing, dissected a "voluntary" Goomba to study its anatomy, and his only objection to Boomstick wanting to a build a "Baby Cannon" would be that such a weapon would require nine months (the time it takes for a pregnant woman to give birth to babies) to reload, and it's also implied that Wiz has attempted to clone Boomstick behind the latter's back (presumably to replace him) and has admitted to making a deal with the Yakuza. He also seems rather nervous when it comes to discussing his marriage, as seen when he quickly tries to change the subject after accidentally letting the news slip.

Despite supposedly being a "sadistic mad scientist who enjoys watching others fight to the death", it has been implied that most of the battles seen in the show are merely simulations, and Wiz does care about the well-being of civilians, like when he expressed concern for the citizens of Gotham City in Death Race, and when he tried to call off the battle royale between the Seven when he learned that not everyone has been evacuated.

Trivia

  • Wiz's nickname sounds similar to "whiz", a term used to describe an exceptionally clever person, fitting for his personality.
  • Wiz is occasionally implied to be Boomstick's employer, which would also make him the founder of Death Battle.
  • The existence of Wiz's robot arm was revealed in the interlude of Fulgore VS Sektor, where he said that it "suffers constant glitches", as demonstrated when he hits Boomstick.
    • In Silver Samurai's analysis preview, it's confirmed that Boomstick apparently cut off his original arm with a tachyon table saw, and the only reason that Wiz isn't mad about that is because robot arms are just superior to normal arms.
    • In Mob VS Tatsumaki, one slap from his robot arm was able to knock out Boomstick.
    • Numerous functions and additions have been shown to the robot arm over the years.
  • He considers many mad scientists in fiction, like Doctor Octopus, to be an inspiration, although Doctor Neo Cortex is an exception.
  • It's become a running joke that Wiz constantly finds universes with fictional metals that are somehow stronger and lighter than titanium.
    • Another running joke that coincides with this is the superhuman experiment origin story, with Wiz particularly wound up by the phrasing of the concept of "seeing faster", as demonstrated by Captain America and Deathstroke.
  • In Sol Badguy's analysis preview, he owned a Robo-Dog that he considered his best friend before Boomstick destroyed it out of anger and confusion over That Man's name.
  • As revealed in Bowser VS Ganon, he has apparently seen a turtle penis "for science".
  • According to Boomstick, he once broke his arm falling out of a chair.
  • Wiz secretly wants to use Boomstick as a test subject for genetic engineering, which Boomstick is very well aware of.
  • In Sephiroth VS Vergil, it is revealed that he is part of Sephiroth's fan club "for research".
  • As of February 2018, Wiz has not seen natural sunlight in over five years, as he revealed in his Top Ten Robot Girlfriends list. He would eventually experience it again when he visits Camp Campbell in Macho Man VS Kool-Aid Man.
    • In the same list, he also revealed that he owns a retro-aging serum and several giant mechs.
  • In Jotaro Kujo's analysis preview, it is revealed he has a pet rat named "Ratsputin" who he uses as a test subect, which resulted in it being possessed by demons.
  • In Crash VS Spyro, Wiz states he was trying to create a time travel wristwatch, and he was convinced that it worked when Boomstick lied after he put him into a month-long coma by shooting him with a potato gun.
  • As revealed in Ryu VS Jin, he created his own version of the Devil Gene, but it was consumed by Boomstick's dog.
  • As revealed in Samurai Jack VS Afro Samurai, Wiz graduated from the Evil School of Science with a major in English. He found out too late that nobody cares about English majors.
    • The same episode also implies that Wiz might have syphilis, which was further joked about in its bloopers video.
    • As revealed in Rick Sanchez's analysis preview, he was bullied by Rick during his time at this school.
  • It's been stated that when Wiz drinks he rants about how robots will destroy humanity, although he apparently drinks so much that he doesn't even remember going to a bar. It's also stated that he got a tattoo on his back during one of these times.
  • Thanos' analysis preview reveals that Wiz apparently owns a chair with a similar appearance and similar powers as Thanos' throne.
  • In Captain Marvel VS Shazam, he made a gun that replicated the Tesseract Bomb, which can turn things and people inside out.
  • In Johnny Cage VS Captain Falcon, it's reveal he has a metal plate covering his groin when Boomstick tried to perform Johnny's Nut Punch on him, and his reason for its existence was that it "wasn't his first rodeo", implying he was hit in the groin before (such as in the analysis previews for this episode and Sub-Zero VS Glacius).
    • However, Boomstick would eventually punch hard enough to bypass this protection and successfully hit Wiz in the groin again in Discord's analysis preview.
  • In Aang VS Edward Elric, Wiz was warned by Boomstick not to transmutate his guns as the two explained the rule of Equivalent Exchange and the three principles needed to use alchemy well at the start of Edward Elric's analysis. However, Wiz has not been shown to be able to transmutate anything on his own.
  • In Ghost Rider VS Lobo, he swore to kill Deadpool one day after he suddenly appeared on the Death Battle Lab's monitor in Lobo's analysis cutaway.
    • He got his wish in Deadpool VS Mask, but he and Boomstick soon regretted it and got emotional when they read the letter that Deadpool sent in the climax of the battle. However, he was accidentally revived by Boomstick in the end through the Continuity Gem (which was also sent alongside the letter), causing the two hosts to run away from him in fear.
  • In Mechagodzilla's analysis preview, he had the idea to use cyber necromancy on his father like Kiryu and the skeletal remains of the original Godzilla so that he can tell Wiz that he was proud of him.
  • In Dragonzord VS Mechagodzilla, it is shown he built a two-headed cyber goose out of a dead goose and parts he had lying around.

  • In Miles Morales VS Static, he created a machine called the "Multiverse Manipulator" to look into alternate timelines. However, Boomstick pushed a button on it, resulting in him and Wiz to change to versions of themselves from an alternate universe; Wiz's is named Jizz and has an Irish accent. When they revert back, he destroyed the button, though it acted up again near the end of the episode.
    • Jizz's accent was originally meant to be Wisconsin/Minnesotan, but Ben couldn't manage to get into the correct accent so they decided to go with the Irish accent instead.
  • In Beerus VS Sailor Galaxia, he invented DUMMI.
    • In Sailor Galaxia's analysis cutaway, he meant to show a picture of Galactica Inflation, but a censored video popped up instead in its place, implying Wiz watches some sort of fetish-based porn.
  • In Zuko VS Shoto Todoroki, Wiz rigged his arm to replicate firebending and even blast out enough ice to freeze Boomstick.

    • While Sanji's has the number three, Wiz's has the number 69.

    • In Vegeta's analysis preview, he is killed by Boomstick, but Boomstick doesn't worry since he knows Wiz has clones and tells Jocelyn that he "needs another Code 4", implying Wiz has multiple contingency plans for death.
  • In Link VS Cloud (2021), It's revealed that Wiz used a fake identity to avoid paying student loans and that Homeland Security is looking for him.
    • In Batman VS Iron Man, he apparently built a Dyson sphere as a potential solution to this particular issue. Boomstick goes on to mention Wiz destroyed several planets with said sphere, to which Wiz claimed he was not legally at liberty to discuss it.

    • In Skyrim VS Dark Souls, he apparently sold his soul to cover the down payment, preventing Boomstick from taking Wiz's soul and placing it in Azura's Star, though it should also be noted that the artifact cannot contain the souls of sapient beings unless it is corrupted into the Black Star.
  • In DIO VS Alucard, he can regenerate when fatally injured like Alucard.
  • In Saitama's analysis preview, Wiz stated that he made a homemade particle accelerator out of old microwaves and 2x4 wood planks on a strict budget.

  • In Death Race's third episode, it was revealed that Wiz wrote his contract with blood and that advanced A.I.s like K.I.T.T. are capable of possessing him thanks to his cybernetically enhanced brain.
  • It was confirmed by the ScrewAttack crew that, should Death Battle ever reach its final episode, the last fight will be a one-on-one match between Wiz and Boomstick.[5]
    • However, Ben Singer stated in 2022 during the 304th episode of DEATH BATTLE Cast that no matchup is 100% confirmed aside from Ruby VS Maka[6]. While this should include Wiz VS Boomstick, the crew has still discussed the episode several times since this Cast, treating it as if it was still the eventual series finale, which leaves its current stance questionable, especially after the announcement of Rooster Teeth being shut down by its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, on March 6th, 2024.[7] However, the matchup would notably be done as a Community Death Battle for DEATH BATTLE Cast's final episode under Rooster Teeth.
  • Both Wiz and Boomstick appear as cameos in Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures.
