- The core connections between Gru and Megamind are that they are both bald, dark-clad technological geniuses with unique facial features (a long nose for Gru and an enlarged braincase for Megamind) from animated movies released in 2010 who started off as supervillains after a tragic event occurred in their childhood (Gru's parents divorced and his mother neglected him, while Megamind's planet was destroyed by a black hole, leading to his parents sending him to safety in a rocket ship which landed in a local prison), but after sympathizing with girls that they originally used for their evil plots (Gru's adoptive daughters Agnes, Edith, and Margo and Megamind's love interest Roxanne Ritchi, respectively), they became heroes after facing off against villains (Gru defeated Vector and became a member of the Anti-Villain League, while Megamind saved Metro City from Tighten and became its primary defender in Metro Man's stead). In addition:
- Both have loyal partners referred to as "Minion" (the Minions and Minion/Ol' Chum, respectively).
- Both are mentors to young girls who call themselves their biggest fans (Poppy Prescott and Keiko Morita, respectively).
- The "Bad" song, sung by Michael Jackson, is featured in each one of their series' movies (the Megamind movie and Despicable Me 3, respectively).
- Megamind's voice actor, Will Ferrell, coincidentally voiced Gru's rival, Maxime Le Mal, in Despicable Me 4.
