Trivia
Production
- The core connections between the Hulk and Godzilla are that they are both nigh-invincible monsters and one-man armies that were created through exposure to radiation (Bruce Banner was struck by gamma rays in an experiment gone wrong while attempting to save the life of Rick Jones, while Godzilla was an ordinary prehistoric creature that had mutated as a result of an American hydrogen bomb test) and are symbolic metaphors on the dangers and paranoia of nuclear war, as well as how humanity's apathy and ignorance to the human condition led to the creation of the worst kinds of monsters (the Hulk is a physical manifestation of Bruce's internal struggle and trauma from all the abuse he endured from his father as a child, while Godzilla is seen as the physical manifestation of humanity's destructive nature). However, while both have destructively rampaged before, they are more often heroes who help protect humanity from powerful threats; as a result, they are perceived as both saviors and dangerous monsters due to their terrifying power, leading to them being hunted down by international governments on several occasions. In addition:
- Both are capable of absorbing a certain type of radiation to empower themselves (gamma radiation and atomic radiation, respectively) and have the ability to regenerate from wounds.
- Both have fought similar enemies, such as antagonistic counterparts created by the government to rival them (Red Hulk and Mechagodzilla, respectively), technologically advanced foes (both Ultron and the Leader for Hulk, and Mechagodzilla, Mecha-King Ghidorah, and Gigan for Godzilla, respectively), and creatures gone wrong (Abomination and Hedorah, respectively).
- Both have sons with powers similar to them (Skaar and Godzilla Junior, respectively).
- Both were heavily inspired by monstrous icons that came before them (Stan Lee was inspired by both Frankenstein's Monster and Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde, while Tomoyuki Tanaka purposefully drew influence from the original King Kong and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms' Rhedosaurus).
- Both had comic runs where they traversed through and faced off against Hell itself (Immortal Hulk and Godzilla in Hell, respectively).
- Both have previously crossed over in the comic series Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
- This episode was confirmed during the Save Death Battle Kickstarter, having been the $700,000 stretch goal reward alongside another unrevealed episode.
- It was previously an option for Season 11's Tournament of Champions where, as part of Death Battle's paid YouTube membership, members were able to vote for one matchup to become an episode. This episode was an option for Week 7, but it lost to Palpatine VS Xehanort.
- This makes it the fourth matchup that lost a fan poll to be made into an episode, after Among Us VS Fall Guys, Kratos VS Asura, and Simon the Digger VS White Lantern, and with the next one being Gru VS Megamind.
- This is the second losing Tournament of Champions matchup to do so, after Kratos VS Asura, and with the next one being Gru VS Megamind.

- Hulk VS Godzilla was considered when Ben Singer was first gauging what Hulk match to do during Season 3, with it showing up on a public poll he held at the time (where it lost to both Hulk VS Doomsday, which would happen later that year, and Hulk VS Broly, which would happen in some form in Season 7).
- Luis Cruz was previously commissioned for 3D art of this matchup.[1]
