Wiz: Avatar Korra, the master of all four elements.

Boomstick: Storm, the X-Men's goddess of the... storms... weather.

Wiz: The building blocks of our natural world are nothing if not tempestuous and unpredictable.

Boomstick: Which means you gotta be some kinda badass to control them.

We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.

Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.

Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.

Narrator: Avatar Aang: Savior of the world, uniter of four nations, destroyer of cabbages. But like all Avatars, after decades of service, he passed away. Humanity would have to move forward and prepare his next reincarnation to take up his mantle. But who could fill Aang's shoes? Her name was Korra.

Boomstick: Wiz? Who was that?

Wiz: Did you leave the door open again?

Narrator: Deuces, gents!

Wiz: Uh, unlike her carefree predecessor, the hotheaded, obstinate Korra was an Avatar prodigy from day one.

Korra: I'm the Avatar, you gotta deal with it!

Boomstick: While Aang struggled to accept his role in the world, Korra never wanted to be anything else.

Wiz: Not only is she an expert hand-to-hand fighter on her own, as a Bender, Korra can manipulate the natural world around her through martial arts. And as the Avatar, she is the only living being who can bend all four elements at once.

Boomstick: Water, earth, fire, air...

Ma-Ti: Heart!

Boomstick: Not you.

Wiz: Straight from the Southern Water Tribe, Korra can control tendrils of water, form massive walls of ice, and generate huge tsunamis.

Boomstick: Aang once raised the sea level to put out these huge fires. Lookin' at the size of the area and what it would take to submerge it, he had to move over 35 million metric tons of water.

Wiz: And since Korra is a reincarnation of Aang and every past Avatar, she should be just as powerful.

Boomstick: With earthbending, Korra can heave big-ass boulders around, shape and control metal, and even tear apart the ground beneath her enemies' feet. Kinda like when her Avatar ancestor Kyoshi broke off a chunk of a continent, dragged it across a bay, and basically just created a new island, named after herself. Queen shit.

Wiz: By measuring the size of the island to get its mass and the size of the bay to get the distance Kyoshi dragged it, displacing this much rock would require an energy over 21 gigatons of TNT. That's almost 15 times more energy than the entire world's nuclear arsenal detonating at the same time.

Boomstick: With firebending, Korra can fire blasts of, well, fire, jet into the sky like a rocket, or breathe like a freakin' dragon!

Wiz: The perfect element to match Korra's hot-headed temper. However, her final element was completely different. Due to its inherently zen, free-flowing nature, Korra struggled, at first, to master airbending.

Boomstick: But, like all good prodigies, she figured it out anyways.

Wiz: With Airbending, Korra can shoot powerful gusts of wind, fly around on tornadoes, and create a cute little air scooter.

Boomstick: She used this element to defeat the Bloodbender Amon, who was fast enough to dodge lightning!

Wiz: He's not the only one. Zuko and Iroh have caught and dodged lightning as well, and Iroh even caught one from the sky. The leader of a lightning bolt moves at 60,000 meters per second. Comparing the distance Amon moved relative to the bolt, he must've been moving over 200 times the speed of sound.

Boomstick: But Korra's more than just a badass martial arts superhero. She also acts as the bridge between the mortal and spirit worlds.

Wiz: The Spirit World is a separate plane of reality, and Korra is stronger while she's physically there. Her direct connection isn't coincidence. She and every Avatar before her are fused with the spirit of light, Raava.

We cut to Wiz and Boomstick. Wiz wheels in a dead-looking Boomstick clone on a dolly, as Boomstick munches a banana, not really paying attention.

Wiz: Every time the Avatar dies and reincarnates, Raava searches out the spirit to bond with their new body, a staple of Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. I've done a lot of research into reincarnation, which I'll demonstrate today with Boomstick, and this anvil!

He pulls a rope hanging from the ceiling.

Boomstick: Wait, what...?

An anvil falls on him, and DUMMI floats onscreen as an orb of light floats into the air.

Wiz: Now, the Avatar is usually reborn into a different nation, but I've set this up so Boomstick will reincarnate into the nearest vessel, this identical clone body.

The orb approches the body, but then flies to DUMMI, going inside him.

Boomstick: Hey Wiz, (glitching) I feel funny...

He and DUMMI scream.

DUMMI: Why are there two of me?!

They scream again.

Boomstick: Where'd my banana go?!

They scream once again and fall to the ground seemingly dead as Wiz facepalms.

Wiz: Ugh, I cut off his leg and everything....

We cut back to the analysis.

Boomstick: (normally) Speakin' of messin' with your soul, Korra can remove or restore your bending, bring her past lives for advice, and tap into the kickass Avatar State.

Wiz: The Avatar State massively boosts Korra's raw bending power, turning her into, effectively, a demigod, and the de facto most powerful being on the planet, if she wasn't already.

Boomstick: Despite that, Korra's no stranger to failure. She was severed from her connection to the past Avatars, and was almost killed while in the Avatar State, which would've ended her cycle of reincarnation entirely.

Wiz: That last brush with death left her physically and emotionally crippled for years. Even after physical therapy, her fiery spirit struggled to reignite.

Boomstick: Korra's entire identity was wrapped up in being the Avatar, all the way from day one.

Wiz: And the biggest trial she had to face was when her place in the world was challenged. Would everyone be better off without an Avatar, or bending at all?

Boomstick: But Korra's nothing if not one hell of a fighter. No matter what life threw at her, she always got back up to kick ass.

Wiz: Korra once blocked an energy blast from a giant spirit cannon, which created this massive crater in the center of Republic City, and almost killed everyone.

Boomstick: Takin' a look at the width and depth of this crater, and assuming it was all vaporized, Korra must've held back a blast worth almost six megatons of TNT. More queen shit.

Wiz: And during Harmonic Convergence, Korra tapped into enough spirit energy to turn into a giant kaiju, and battle the Dark Avatar Unalaq for the fate of the world.

Boomstick: Wiz, I told you, we don't talk about Season Two! Okay, Wan was cool.

Wiz: From taking down anarchist revolutionaries to fascist empires, Korra proved herself as an Avatar worthy of her forebearers.

Boomstick: With her teammates Mako and Bolin, teachers like Tenzin and Toph, and badass girlfriend Asami by her side, there was nothin' she couldn't do.

Wiz: Queen shit?

Boomstick: Queen shit.

Tahno: Come on, little girl. Give me your best shot.

He gets hit under the chin by Korra's stream of water, collapsing out of the ring as the bell rings.

Korra: Hmph. Chump.

Wiz: Boomstick, do you know what happens to a person who's struck by lightning?

Boomstick: The same thing that happens to everything else?

Wiz: You got it!

Boomstick: Do you know what happens to white-haired mutants whose parents are killed by a plane crash? They become badass weather witches!

Wiz: After Ororo Munroe's parents were... that, she was forced to fend for herself on the streets of Cairo, under the tutelage of Achmed El Gibár.

Boomstick: The life of a street rat wasn't doin' it for Ororo, so she took off across the Sahara in search of a real home.

Wiz: And that's when she began to master her mutant powers. In the same way that Homo sapiens, humans, evolve from earlier hominids like Homo erectus... Ugh, go ahead.

Boomstick giggles.

Wiz: Homo superior, or mutants, are an offshoot of regular humans. They possess the X-Gene on their 23rd chromosome that effectively grants them superpowers.

Boomstick: But it's a lottery. You could end up like ol' Beak here. Gugh...!

Wiz: Or you could end up like Ororo and possess complete control over the weather itself, while being super hot, unlike Beak.

Charlie: BEAK!

Dee: No.

Charlie: No...!

Boomstick: For all she knew, she was a goddess sent straight from heaven, and that's exactly what the local tribes thought when she arrived in her ancestral Kenyan homeland.

Wiz: Ororo's mutant gene allows her to psionically manipulate the atmosphere, capable of summoning a hurricane with less than a conscious thought.

Boomstick: When she does feel like using conscious thoughts, something Wiz tells me I struggle with, Ororo can create storms that cover the entire Earth.

Wiz: Her weather manipulation isn't just powerful, but precise. She can call upon massive tidal waves, conceal herself in fog, and even generate localized blizzards cold enough to freeze lava.

Boomstick: She can summon bolts of lightning, even ones that are continents away, or generate electricity inside your brain. And she once zapped Cyclops with enough lightning to restart an artificial sun called the Ring of Fire, a name that reminds me of the morning after Taco Tuesday.

Wiz: Encircling the plant Polemachus, the Ring of Fire provided all the same energy as a regular star.

Boomstick: But her favorite element is probably wind. With it, she can blow people away with tornadoes, suck the air out of a person's lungs, and generate enough lift to fly. She once flew fast enough to reach the edge of Earth's atmosphere from ground level in just a few seconds.

Wiz: By measuring the angle and size of the Earth to get the distance, and estimating a time frame of about five seconds, Ororo had to have flown at 4,000 times the speed of sound. She can even manipulate solar winds to fly through space. Unlike winds on Earth, which are just the movement of air molecules through the atmosphere, solar winds are streams of charged particles, mostly electrons and protons, ejected from the sun.

Boomstick: Almost as crazy as how she can breathe in the vacuum of space! She creates a mini-atmosphere around herself by gathering, um, stray hydrogen atoms. Atoms, those are like, really small, last time I checked. Are these writers just giving her whatever powers they want now? How is that weather?

Wiz: Ororo's abilities apply to any atmospheric conditions, whether they be in outer space or alternate dimensions.

We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.

Wiz: Essentially, anything even remotely considered "weather".

Boomstick: Man, I wish I had crazy writers givin' me random superpowers just because it's funny. That'd be awesome.

We see he now has metal hands with red repulsors in the palms.

Boomstick: Well, anyways, I'm gonna go use my rocket hands I've always had to get my beer out the fridge. Away!

He flies off, kicking up dust which makes Wiz cough. We cut back to the analysis.

Wiz: Perhaps her most useful ability, though, is to sense changes in the weather with a pseudo-sixth sense. Ororo literally sees atmospheric patterns and energy as colors, with the world as her canvas.

Boomstick: She's so good with it, she could track a jet flying over New York, while she was fighting the Shadow King in Wakanda. That's on the other side of the planet! Yeah, no wonder everyone thought she was a goddess! She is!

Wiz: Ororo enjoyed all the worship and admiration until the day she was contacted by an American, Charles Xavier, with an interesting proposal.

Don Vito Corleone: I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.

Boomstick: "Join the X-Men! Oh, pretty please? They were eaten by this living island; it's a long story, but we're short staffed."

Wiz: Xavier founded the X-Men as a team of mutant superheroes that would attempt to mend race relations between Homo sapien and superior through non-violent means.

Boomstick: Because what better way to teach kids in the '60s about the Civil Rights movement than with a bunch of good lookin', lilly white teenagers with superpowers from upstate New York?

Wiz: Feeling she had spent enough time blessing the rains down in Africa, Ororo agreed, and was assigned the codename Storm.

Boomstick: And she more than earned the spot. She's proven herself worthy to wield Mjolnir, led a war against the Inhumans, and even survived a blast from her own lightning.

Wiz: This is impressive, considering her lightning is powerful enough to match Polaris, who once used her powers to punch through Earth's crust, all the way to the planet's core. Assuming she pulverized a cylinder of earth all the way down, she had to have exerted over 15 teratons of TNT.

Boomstick: She once beat the mutant Callisto in unarmed combat. And Callisto has, apparently, mastered every single martial art known to man.

Wiz: Despite her unbelievable power, Storm has trained "X-tenstively", (chuckles) in hand-to-hand combat. Get it? It also probably didn't hurt that she's fast enough to dodge literal beams of light! But did you get it, though?

Boomstick: Nope! And after kicking Callisto's ass, she became the queen of these sewer dwelling mutants called the Morlocks. She really just couldn't escape being worshipped, could she? Even by grody, underground monster people.

Wiz: Well, she later married the Black Panther, T'Challa, and became queen of Wakanda, too, so, she really runs the gamut.

Boomstick: But even demigods have their Achilles' heels. That plane crash from her childhood left her crushed under rubble for days, giving her a bad case of claustrophobia that rears its ugly head every once in a while.

Wiz: But that's not enough to stop this queen. After the departure of Scott Summers, Storm became the leader of the X-Men, because of course she did.

Boomstick: And when Geordi La Forge eventually came crawling back, the two fought over who would lead the team.

Wiz: Despite Scott literally being able to shoot death lasers from his eyes, Storm kicked his ass, and even better, she didn't even have her powers at the time.

Boomstick: As it should be, 'cause there's no one more devoted to her team than Storm is. She may be an Omega Level mutant, but her greatest superpower is her bottomless compassion.

Wiz: Mess with her team, and you'll watch as Ororo's heart of gold quickly turns to ice, as she quite literally steals your breath away.

Storm: Testing me, hmm? It's time you remembered why they call me Storm!

At the South Pole, Avatar Korra attempts to meditate near the water, but starts to get impatient.

Korra: Ugh. I'm so bored!

She slams her fists on the ground in frustration, accidentally creating a shockwave that ruptures a nearby glacier. Before she can assess the damage, she hears lightning strike and notices a stormy cloud begin to form above her. The member of the X-Men, Storm, emerges from the clouds to speak with her.

Storm: Your powers are impressive, but you lack discipline.

Korra scoffs at her claims and assumes a battle stance.

Korra: Ehe... I'm the Avatar? Master of all elements? You wanna see for yourself?

Storm: Of course, Avatar. I'll show you what an X-Man can do.

With her new opponent having accepted her challenge, Korra begins the battle by shooting blasts of air towards Ororo, who avoids them and counters with her own wind blasts. Korra narrowly dodges them before creating an air scooter that she hops on. While riding, she shoots more air blasts that Storm flies away from before she aims the next current to negate her scooter.

Korra quickly propels herself off the ground to leap towards Ororo, but Storm creates a strong wind current that sends her back to the ground. As Korra recovers, Storm conjures up lightning and aims downwards, prompting her to run. She dodges multiple lightning strikes until she uses airbending to blow herself towards the water.

Korra lands on a piece of broken ice and waterbends it to the sky, allowing her to get closer to her opponent and attempt to direct a blast of water at her foe. Storm easily deflects the water, but with a simple flick, Korra sends another jet stream of water that catches her leg and throws her into the ocean. Korra lands back on the ground and forms another air scooter to move forward.

An angered Storm emerges from the sea and creates a massive tornado that incorporates the water surrounding her. Korra directs her air scooter towards the tornado to get closer and narrowly dodges more attempted lightning strikes.

Korra: Water, lightning, AND airbending? Starting to feel a little less special here...

Korra uses her metal bending to disassemble two nearby motor vehicles, then reassembles them to encase Storm in a metallic binding. She leaps off her air scooter and delivers a devastating kick that sends Storm into the portal that leads to the Spirit World.

In the Spirit World, Storm lands in the Fog of Lost Souls. She begins hearing several voices as multiple silhouettes pass her, leaving her overwhelmed.

Fog spirit: Dirty traaash.

Zhao: I am Zhao the Conqueror!

Fog spirit: Filthy mutant! Weak!

Storm: Where am I? Who are you? Answer me!

Korra lands in shortly after her, knowing to avoid the pit below.

Fog spirit: You're a freak of nature! Abomination! Freak!

Storm: Gotta get up... Gotta get out...

Young girl: Anybody wanna help me? Please...

Storm: Scott, Jean, Logan... I won't let you down!

Her strong will and determination allows her to push the fog away to let her see the way out. She forms a strong tornado that ends up catching an unfortunate, but familiar victim in the Avatar world.

Cabbage Merchant: My cabbages! I'll never be safe!

Korra witnesses her opponent rise in the tornado of winds and fire and knows she is not facing an ordinary enemy.

Korra: You're no bender.

Korra's eyes glow as she enters the Avatar State. She then uses firebending to propel herself in the air towards Ororo. Storm attempts to redirect some of the tornado on her, but Korra is able to form a shield out of air to withstand it, allowing her to close in and deliver a devastating fiery punch. Storm lands on the rocky ground that is lifted in the air thanks to Korra's earthbending. As Storm tries to get up, she notices Korra holding another massive rock that she hurls forward, trapping Storm in between the two large pieces of land.

Despite this, Storm is able to escape with her strong wind abilities. Korra quickly unleashes a massive gust of wind, Storm attempts to counter, but is too slow and is blown into another Spirit Portal. Korra tries to follow her, but Storm brings a flood of water that puts Korra into the ground. Storm splits the sea in two to get a better look of where her foe is at and directs more water towards her. To avoid drowning, Korra forms a round iceberg with an air pocket.

Storm attempts to unleash lightning and ice on Korra, but it is not able to pierce the iceberg. As Storm shows signs of exhaustion, Raava awakens inside Korra to unleash the Avatar's full strength. Korra roars fire and disperses the iceberg before flying forward at full speed. She uses her firebending to unleash a devastating combo that hits Storm upwards before sending her to the ground. Using fire and earthbending, she encases Ororo under multiple flaming rocks.

Korra: I know what you are, spirit of storms.

Korra uses waterbending to form a large, sharp icicle and points it forward. Storm smirks at her proclamation.

Storm: Hahaha... Exactly!

As her eyes glow and sparkle from electricity, Storm creates a massive lightning storm in the air that disrupts Korra's attack. She is also able to direct it to free her arms from the rocks. After enduring multiple strikes, Korra is able to catch one of the lightning bolts and tries to redirect it forward, but Storm catches her hand with her left hand and negates the attack. She then supercharges two fingers on her right hand and aims directly at Korra's head.

Korra lets out one final agonizing scream as the electricity blows out and obliterates her brain. Storm lets go of the deceased Korra's hand off and leaves her limp body to fall to the ground. She flies upwards as she allows the water to fill in and carry away her lifeless adversary.

Storm: You fought nobly, Avatar...

Storm flies away into the Spirit Portal to return back to Earth.

We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.

Boomstick: I think I just queen shit myself! This fight wasn't totally straightforward. Korra can dominate most fighters pretty easy with her raw bending power and martial arts skills, especially with the Avatar State. Not even some of the best benders on the planet like Zaheer and Kuvira could stand up to her at her best.

Wiz: However, despite Korra's awesome Avatar powers, she found herself outmatched by Storm's skill, precision, and overwhelming force.

We cut to the post-analysis.

Wiz: For instance, Storm's massively hypersonic flight and ability to sense and control weather across the planet meant she could always fight safely from a distance.

Boomstick: Korra's trained in martial arts from birth, but even if she did manage to get in close and fight hand-to-hand, Storm's experience with the X-Men and defeating Callisto meant she could keep up.

Wiz: While Korra may have fought people who could dodge lightning, Storm can dodge literal beams of light. Even just using her flight speed exiting the atmosphere, she'd still be nearly 20 times faster than Korra.

Boomstick: Korra did have access to elements like fire and earth that Storm didn't. If she somehow found out about Storm's claustrophobia, she could theoretically trap her in some rocks to exploit it.

Wiz: But Storm would be more than powerful enough to just break out. Her lightning was strong enough to match Polaris, who punched a hole in the Earth all the way down to its core.

Boomstick: Yeah, ultimately, Storm was just way more powerful. Remember that planet-sized storm she created? Well, I know clouds are lighter than air, but those are a shit ton of clouds, and need a lot of work to move around.

Wiz: By measuring their volume, and the speed at which they moved, the energy Storm needed for this would be over 500 exatons of TNT, about 250 times more powerful than what Korra could output.

Boomstick: And considering this is the same woman who was powerful enough to reignite an artificial star, results like that aren't outliers.

Wiz: Even taking the fight to the Spirit World wouldn't have helped, considering Storm has manipulated alien weather from outer space and alternate dimensions. She'd have no problem adapting there, and considering Storm's powers are genetic in nature, not spiritual, Korra would not be able to depower her with Energybending.

Boomstick: And none of that is counting the ways Storm could've ended the fight right off the bat, like suckin' the air right out of Korra's lungs, or generating a lightning storm in her brain.

We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.

Wiz: Korra was a tenacious, unrelenting opponent, but Storm's massive range, precise control, deadly skill, and unbelievable power won her this fight.

Boomstick: Don't get bent outta shape, Korra just couldn't weather the Storm.

We cut to the "Winner" card.

Wiz: The winner is Storm.

Weather the Elements Track Cover

Composition

The track for this fight is "Weather the Elements" by Therewolf Media. It is a dramatic orchestral track that emulates the Eastern elements of the Legend of Korra series and the epic, adventurous tone of the X-Men series.

Title

The title refers to Storm's ability to manipulate the weather and Korra's ability to manipulate the elements. It is also a play on the phrase "weather the storm", which Boomstick references in his ending pun for this episode.

Cover Art

The cover art done by John Mitchell depicts a thundercloud striking an iceberg (likely referencing how the fight starts in the South Pole) with a lightning bolt that is surrounded by a spiral column of fire, earth, and air, with waves of water splashing from the iceberg as a result of the impact, representing both combatants' elemental abilities. Glowing white eyes representing both combatants can be seen in the background, with the one on the left having a blue flame trailing off of it (representing Korra's Avatar State) while the one on the right has a lightning-like effect (representing Storm's weather abilities).

Trivia

Production

  • The connections between Korra and Storm are that they are both heroic women of color born to nobility and from tribal descent (Korra's father, Tonraq, is the chief of the Water Tribe, and Storm's mother, N'Daré, is a princess of the Uzuri Tribe), who can manipulate the forces of nature itself (bending the elements and controlling the weather, respectively). Both are part of a global minority born with special abilities that face prejudice by normal humans out of fear of their power (Benders and Mutants, respectively), of which they are amongst the most powerful of their kind, possessing a special title to indicate such (the Avatar and an Omega Level Mutant, respectively), set out to maintain peace between the two, and have been romantically involved with rich and influential but non-powered individuals with advanced technology (Asami Sato, the heiress of Future Industries, and Black Panther, the king of Wakanda, respectively). Both of them faithfully serve their duties as protectors of humanity under the guidance of bald, pacifist mentors who share their ideals of world peace (Tenzin and Professor X, respectively), and have once temporarily lost their powers (Korra once had her bending taken away by Amon, while Storm once lost her powers protecting Rogue from a power neutralizer device aimed at her that was created by Forge). Both of their powers come from ancestral sources associated with spirituality (Korra is the latest incarnation of the Avatar, while Storm descends from an ancient line of African priestesses), and both possess glowing white eyes when they use their powers.
  • This is the first episode since Zuko VS Shoto Todoroki where the cover for the track is in a 2D art-style.

Easter Eggs

  • The introduction to Korra's analysis is narrated in a style reminiscent of how Shiro Shinobi, the radio broadcaster of Republic City, recaps the events of each previous episode at the beginning of each new episode of The Legend of Korra.
  • Boomstick expressing distain towards Season 2 of The Legend of Korra while giving due praise to the Avatar Wan story is a reference to the general backlash that season of the show received, with Wan being considered one of the few good elements of it.
  • During the portion of the battle in the Spirit World, when Storm falls into the Fog of Lost Souls, the silhouettes of several past Death Battle losers can be seen, those being Goku Black, Ken Masters, Batman, Jotaro Kujo, Sonic the Hedgehog, Portgas D. Ace, and Ben Tennyson.
  • The ice sphere that Korra forms around herself later in the fight is reminiscent of how her predecessor Aang froze himself and Appa in the iceberg Katara and Sokka would eventually find him in at the beginning of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
  • Korra's death coming from a bolt of lightning killing her while she's in the Avatar State may be a reference to Book Two of Avatar: The Last Airbender, where Aang also received a lethal wound from lightning while in his own Avatar State.

Errors

  • In Korra's "Feats" slide, "cannon" is misspelled as "canon".
  • There's a mistake in the post-analysis when Storm and Korra's power output is compared, as Wiz stated that Storm's exatons cloud feat makes her 250 times more powerful compared to Korra's gigatons feat. An exaton is one billion gigatons, which actually makes Storm 250 billion times more powerful than Korra.
