Production
- The core connections between Light and Columbo are that they are both incredibly intelligent protagonists from crime drama shows. Both are detectives regarded as the top ones in their precincts who seek to take down criminals and, as part of their mission, wear metaphorical masks in order to keep their enemies at arm's length (Light constantly keeps up a facade of not being Kira to various detectives, while Columbo typically pretends to be dim-witted toward his suspects), leading to iconic cat and mouse games. In addition:
- Both wear similar outfits consisting of a tan coat over a white shirt and tie.
- This is also a battle of opposites, as Light is a genius serial killer with a large ego, while Columbo is a genius detective who catches killers with large egos. Additionally, Light kills people with the Death Note when he writes down their full name, while Columbo refuses to say his full name in his show.
- This episode was heavily requested by writer Liam Swan, to the point that several previous episodes featured minor cameos of Columbo.
- This episode was ultimately confirmed during the Save Death Battle Kickstarter, having been one of the $125,000 stretch goal rewards.
- This will be a bonus episode with a unique format and not a regular Death Battle episode.[1]
- Prior to the confirmation of this episode's production, Liam Swan stated his wish for Gianni Matragrano to voice Columbo if he ever were to appear in an episode of Death Battle, which eventually came true in this episode.
- Matragrano is known for his YouTube channel where he posts comedic voiceover memes, including multiple Death Note and Columbo videos, with one centered around Columbo catching Light.
- This is the sixth Bonus episode in the series, after DEATH BATTLE! vs The World, Vegeta VS Mewtwo?, ScrewAttack Steam Sale VS Your Wallet, The Seven Battle Royale, and Excalibur VS Raiden.
- This is the third Bonus episode to be treated like a real episode and not like a joke, after The Seven Battle Royale and Excalibur VS Raiden.
- This is the fifth Anime/Manga VS Live Action-themed episode, after Tigerzord VS Gundam Epyon, Power Rangers VS Voltron, Obi-Wan Kenobi VS Kakashi, and Darth Vader VS Obito Uchiha.
