Trivia
Production
- The core connections between Master Chief and Doom Slayer are that they are both mostly silent protagonists of first-person video game shooter series that redefined the genre, serving as unstoppable and legendary intergalactic one-man army super-soldiers armed with a colossal military arsenal and iconic green suit of armor (the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor and the Praetor Suit, respectively). Both were previously part of dangerous but special tests and augmentations that enhanced their capabilities to superhuman levels, which they would put to use in a war for humanity against an antagonistic galactic empire (the Covenant Empire and Hell, respectively). Both are also heavy-duty wielders of nearly every form of weapon, making significant use of the likes of primitive military weaponry, plasma armaments, and even energy blades (the Type-1 Energy Sword and the Crucible, respectively). In addition:
- Both have a history of defying orders and briefly fought alongside a team which they acted upon as its leader (Blue Team and the Night Sentinels, respectively).
- Both are known for having a deeply close connection to an AI (Cortana and VEGA, respectively).
- Both of their series have deep religious theming, with the combatants themselves bearing messianic reputations in their worlds and being revered or feared by allies and enemies alike (for Halo, the series was named after an angel's halo, the Flood species is named after a biblical disaster, SPARTANs like Master Chief are referred to as "demons", and the Covenant is built off of religious devotion; for Doom, the series is more obvious in its usage of Hell, demonic monsters, the Seraphim, etc.).
- As part of the Save Death Battle Kickstarter, one of the rewards for the $225,000 stretch goal was a rematch that everyone who pledged a reward tier could vote on, which this episode won,[1][2] beating the Ninja Turtle Battle Royale, Mario VS Sonic, Zelda VS Peach, Terminator VS RoboCop, Gaara VS Toph, Yang VS Tifa, Mewtwo VS Shadow, Tracer VS Scout, and Ben 10 VS Green Lantern.
- This makes it the sixth matchup to be made due to fan-polling, after Zitz VS Leonardo, Hulk VS Doomsday, Bill Cipher VS Discord, Cole MacGrath VS Alex Mercer, and Wile E. Coyote VS Tom Cat.
- In an instance of the Death Battle Curse striking, the very same day this episode was revealed to the public, Microsoft announced a new Halo project being made with Unreal Engine 5.[3]
