Interlude
Wiz & Boomstick
by Brandon Yates |
Wiz: The Scarlet Witch, Marvel's Crimson Queen of Chaos.
Boomstick: Zatanna, DC's Magnificent Mistress of Magic.
Wiz: There are those who wield the mystic arts like gods to reshape creation to their whims.
Boomstick: And there are those who just like to put on a hell of a show. Either way, don't mess with 'em if ya know what's good for ya.
We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.
Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Scarlet Witch
Wiz: Though we may drift day-by-day in a world seemingly concrete and eternal, the fabric of reality is, in fact, more delicate than we might dare to wonder. Imagine every single iota of it; every star, galaxy, universe, all within the grasp of a single mortal woman, to control at her whim. Imagine the danger we're all in if you piss her off.
Boomstick: We don't have to, because her name is Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch.
Boomstick: As a kid, she and her brother Pietro were poor Romani who were lucky enough to be turned into superpowered freaks by the High Evolutionary.
Wiz: Unable to control her apparently new magical abilities, it wasn't long before Wanda lost control and was branded a witch.
Boomstick: Until who would show up but the mutant Master of Magnetism himself, Magneto. Definitely givin' off some big dad energy there.
Wiz: So, to return Magneto's kindness, she and Pietro joined his... Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Great name there, Magneto, solid branding.
Boomstick: And it wasn't long before she traded her supervillain creds for a membership with the Avengers, which might have been a bit too much for poor Wanda because she definitely drew the superpower short stick.
Wiz: By waving her hands, Wanda could create small random events known as hexes, suddenly altering the probability of any event happening.
Boomstick: That's a cool way of saying she can do, like, one magicky thing per fight and then be totally useless. An energy blast here, some telekinesis there, a force field if she's feelin' frisky. Not exactly the same oomph as, say, the God of Thunder or the jolly green Worldbreaker.
Wiz: But something strange was happening. Over time, her hexes increased in breadth and power, as if there was more of Wanda's powers than met the eye. She learned to slow and stop time, drain and absorb energy, duplicate herself and others, teleport to different dimensions, and even strip others of their powers entirely.
Boomstick: It was almost as if there was more to Wanda than just bein' some random science experiment. Let's ask our resident expert on the deepest trenches of character history.
We cut to Boomstick and Jocelyn.
Boomstick: Jocelyn, if you will.
Jocelyn: In reality, Wanda's powers weren't entirely the result of the High Evolutionary, nor was she the mutant daughter of Magneto as he's claimed. Her powers weren't just some simple hexes. She might as well been a god. Until now, she had merely been dipping her toes into the vast ocean known as Chaos Magic. Though her powers may have seemed to be the byproduct of science, they were, in reality, the gift of the Lovecraftian elder god Chthon, who attempted to turn Wanda into his future vessel.
Boomstick: Reminds me of my summers by the sea with old uncle Yog-Sothoth.
We cut back to the analysis.
Jocelyn: In time, Wanda discovered she could alter the probability of anything she could think of. Turning a mathematical impossibility into an absolute certainty, and vice versa! Wanda's powers kept growing and growing, turning her into a being strong enough to rival even the mightiest of gods! Like, literally, Wanda's Chaos Magic is counterpart to the Phoenix Force, the embodiment of cosmic order! Y'know, that fiery space chicken that can destroy the universe? Heh, Wanda fought it, and even briefly erased it from existence.
Wiz: At her height, the Scarlet Witch achieved total control over energy, the weather, the elements, your mind, your body, your soul, all of time, all of matter, and all of reality. She can wipe you from existence with a thought, and rend the very fabric of the universe as though it were tissue paper.
Boomstick: She isn't even limited to Chaos Magic either. They might not have been what made her a god, but the High Evolutionary's experiments did make her more receptive to channeling magical energy. Oh, maybe that's why Mama Boomstick always warned me about redheads!
Wiz: She's so receptive in fact, that Wanda is the lone nexus being of the 616 reality. A focal point for the universe's magical energies, and one that belongs equally to all other timelines.
Jocelyn: It's no wonder she was considered a candidate for Sorcerer Supreme. I mean, shit, why wasn't she? She might as well be a walking, talking Infinity Gauntlet.
Wiz: Well, she may have the power of a god, but she's still stuck with a human's body that can be overpowered by physically stronger foes. Though, she also survived being shot with a black matter bullet capable of, and I quote: "world-shattering energy." So there's that.
Boomstick: She does technically need to be able to think of a spell in order to get it to happen.
Proud Mission
by Daniel James |
Boomstick: So she could theoretically be blitzed, but she's also blocked Thor's galaxy-crossing hammer, kept up with dudes like X-Man, who can fight within Planck time, and even amp her own speed beyond the concept of speed herself.
Wiz: Despite being far and away the mightiest among Earth's mightiest heroes, Wanda resented the pressure of her incredible power. She actually wanted a quiet life as a wife and a mother.
Boomstick: But because no one in comics is allowed to have a happily ever after, that life was taken from her by literal Satan. Not the last time he'd do this, too! Wanda snapped and took the multiverse with her.
Wiz: By tapping into an inconceivable and unknowable pool of energy known as the Life Force, Wanda rewrote all of reality, creating a new universe where life was just how she wanted it.
Boomstick: No matter whose life she had to change. In this House of M, she had her family back, but at the cost of her sanity.
Jocelyn: And it wasn't long before it came all crashing down around her. Once her family and friends discovered the lie of their new lives and turned against her, she uttered three fateful words and erased nearly all of mutantkind: "NO. MORE. MUTANTS."
Wiz: Wanda weaved her magic throughout all of existence, created cracks across reality which spread throughout the omniverse, and threatened to annihilate all of creation, the entirety of Marvel's infinite cosmology, everything that ever was.
Boomstick: Shit got dark. And while Wanda has worked to keep her powers in check since then, that threat is always there. But honestly, that sounds more like a problem for anyone's who's stupid enough to get in her way.
Wiz: Both a blessing and a curse. A help and a hex. Such is the true power of the Scarlet Witch.
Zatanna Zatara
Rascal Carnival
by Gary Liu |
Wiz: Come one, come all to see the magnificent Zatanna Zatara! For never was there a greater professor of presti-digital performance!
Boomstick: AKA magic! Except Zatanna's spells aren't just smoke and mirrors, they're the real deal. So you're really gettin' your money's worth.
Wiz: She learned everything she knew from her father, Giovanni Zatara, who put his powers to good use as one of DC's very first superheroes.
Boomstick: No joke, he's the guy who taught Batman everything he knows about escape artistry. He debuted the same issue as Superman. And the young Zatanna was more than happy to serve as his assistant, learning everything he knew about the cutthroat world of entertainment. Oh, and-and cape shit too, but the former is way worse.
Wiz: She inherited her father's incredible mystical abilities as well. Essentially, anything Zatanna thinks of, she can make real. And she focuses this absurdly powerful ability by speaking her desired effect backwards. Her father based this technique on the diaries of Leonardo da Vinci, who some theorized wrote backwards in order to hide his ideas from the repressive medieval Catholic Church.
Boomstick: Or because he was... left-handed!
An audience gasp is heard.
Slaughter The Robots
by Jeffrey R. Whitcher |
Wiz: That's another theory... if you hate fun.
Boomstick: And Zatanna's apparently big-brained enough that she has no problem speakin' backwards at a drop of a hat, like when this one dude kept reversing time in the middle of her sentences. She started speaking in palindromes so that she'd still be speaking backwards no matter what! I mean, you know what they say, Wiz. "Go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog."
Wiz: With her magic, Zatanna has bent the laws of reality to her whims. She's transmuted matter on an atomic level, teleported across dimensions, commanded the elements, turned invisible, removed powers, cast illusions, read and controlled minds, travelled through and stopped time, and can even wipe people from existence with a single word.
Boomstick: It might not seem obvious from that hokey-magic-castle getup, but Zatanna is one of the most powerful sorcerers in DC, like the time she battled the time tailor, Zor, an old enemy of the Spectre. Y'know, the angel of God's divine wrath?!
Wiz: In order to defeat an opponent of such unimaginable power, Zatanna focused her magical might into shattering the boundaries of reality. She reached out beyond the very comic panels themselves, and pulled Zor's entire magical universe down around him. She literally handled all of reality like it was a sheet of paper and crumpled it in her hands.
We cut to Wiz and Jocelyn.
Jocelyn: That might seem completely incomprehensibly impossible to us, but it's all a matter of belief. Literally! As long as Zatanna believes she can do something with her magic, she'll do it.
Wiz: As she puts it, her magic is essentially asserting one reality, then replacing it with another. This is similar to other magical characters like Doctor Fate and Green Lantern, whose powers have been stated to work the exact same way.
Jocelyn: But it's not like any rando can do magic by wishing on a star. Zatanna is genetically predisposed to this kind of magical reality warping. Her mom was, in actuality, a Homo Magi, a sub-race of humans that are naturally adept at magic.
We cut back to the analysis.
Boomstick: So it's no wonder that Zatanna became an invaluable member of both the Justice League of America and Justice League Dark. Th-The Shadow the Hedgehog version, basically.
Wiz: Zatanna harnessed an entire year's worth of sunlight into a single energy blast, created ruptures across all of space and time throughout the DC multiverse, and has even claimed she's as powerful as Superman himself. Pre-Crisis Superman, in case you were wondering. Her only limit is her imagination and will. In fact, her backwards speaking is mostly a stagecraft tradition meant to boost her concentration.
Boomstick: In a pinch, she can cast a spell with a single thought, and I doubt anyone's winning a quick-draw with her. She's matched superheroes like Martian Manhunter, who's scanned every mind on Earth in a Planck instant. Or how about Doctor Fate, whose magic traveled across the universe at the completely immeasurable "Velocity of God."
Wiz: Zatanna has fended off countless reality-shattering threats like the eldritch Upside-Down Man, primordial darkness that is evil incarnate, and the void beyond creation, Pralaya.
Boomstick: This shadow goop lady ate all of DC Comics, all of creation, everything. Gods, demons, rabbits, and spandex, everything! And Zatanna's magic was strong enough to hold her back.
Marching to Glory
by François Rousselot |
Wiz: And then, after secretly planting Swamp Thing inside Pralaya, she weaved the spell with him in to literally regrow all of reality back in seconds.
Boomstick: Zatanna tricked a being older than God, and then blew her ass up from the inside with a whole new omniverse. Abraca-goddamn-dabra!
Wiz: Such is the almighty power of Zatanna's will. Should it falter though, or should her focus be disrupted, it could all come crashing down like a house of cards. Belief is a fragile thing after all, and her powers were weakened for a time after she lost belief in herself.
Boomstick: And she's definitely got one big weak point. She's a huge daddy's girl.
Wiz: Despite her amazing career, she has struggled within herself to live up to her father's legacy, especially after his heroic death.
Boomstick: And this MF-er has died a lot of times. So Zee's therapy can't be cheap, especially after dating John Constantine. Oh, I can just smell the lager and self-loathing from here. (sniffs) No, no wait, that's me.
Wiz: Questionable romance aside, Zatanna is a consummate professional raised on one singular principle: the show must go on. And she'll always finish strong with a standing ovation.
Prelude
Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set. We've run the data through all possibilities.
Boomstick: IT'S TIME FOR A DEATH BATTLEEE... with magic!
Death Battle
Spellaholics Synonymous
by Brandon Yates |
A packed theater of audience members give applause to a magic act featuring Zatanna Zatara, who gives a bow as she prepares to entertain.
Zatanna: Ohohoho, thank you, thank you! And for my first trick... tah a ni tibbar deR! ("Red rabbit in a hat!")
An attempt to conjure a rabbit from her hat goes awry as crimson energy bursts forth, summoning not an animal, but instead, Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. Ever the performer, Zatanna awkwardly presents the audience with the results of her magic.
Zatanna: Uh... ta-da!
As the audience gives her a round of applause, Wanda is less amused, belittling the skill of her summoner.
Scarlet Witch: You! What sort of two-bit sorceress do you think you are?
This remark is anything but lost on Zatanna.
Zatanna: Two-bit?! reh eransne ,sniahC! ("Chains, ensnare her!")
Out of thin air, she summons lengthy chains at her, ensnaring her in place. Scarlet Witch, however, is not intimidated in the slightest.
Scarlet Witch: Perhaps I was being generous.
She breaks the chains with ease and turns them back on their original summoner, capturing her in turn. The Scarlet Witch telekinetically tosses Zatanna into the walls and the stage. She lifts her back up, but she reassures her audience of her handling of the situation.
Zatanna: All part of the show, folks. Haha. stibbar emoceB! ("Become rabbits!")
As Wanda tries to slam Zatanna into the stage once more, she transmutes the chains into a group of rabbits, who proceed to swarm the Scarlet Witch. One bold bunny wearing a familiar hat jumps out of the crowd and bares its teeth against Wanda, but she retaliates by using her Chaos Magic against all the hares.
All of the critters suddenly transform into playing cards, with the blindly angered Scarlet Witch picking one up and showing surprise. She sees that Superman is on the card, and a fist suddenly emerges from the card to punch her, sending her flying into a wall. An illusion of Superman comes to life, with Zatanna appearing from behind him.
Scarlet Witch: I'd say this calls for... an Avenger!
In response, the Scarlet Witch distorts reality to summon an illusory Hulk, who proceeds to fight the Superman copy. Not standing by, Zatanna summons an illusory Wonder Woman to dispel the Incredible Hulk with her blade, and the Mighty Thor suddenly destroys the Wonder Woman copy before charging at Superman. As the two zoom right by Zatanna, Scarlet Witch addresses her opponent from behind in a crimson fog.
Scarlet Witch: Do you know the difference between you and I?
The red stage curtains turn into Wanda's headpiece as she appears as a giant in front of the stage.
Scarlet Witch: Power!
Wanda goes to grab Zatanna to crush her, but she forms a barrier around herself.
Zatanna: Well, I think the difference is...
The Scarlet Witch appears to crush her opponent as she closes her fist until a blinding light reveals Zatanna herself suddenly enlarged and towering over Wanda in a bursting display of bright blue fireworks.
Zatannna: Presentation!
Scarlet Witch seems surprised with her opponent's power.
Zatanna: And I know a trick... when I see one.
As the Scarlet Witch goes to attack her, Zatanna suddenly turns towards the viewer, reaching her hand out of the screen. Everything turns to static for a while before zooming out to show Zatanna falling in an endless void. As she comes to her senses and sees everything comes to light, she sees multiple globed universes all around her, and flies up to inspect one.
Zatanna: Huh? Universes?
The globe she inspects is suddenly covered by a crimson energy, and Scarlet Witch appears in front of her, grasping the globe before crushing it.
Scarlet Witch: You can't run forever. Now make like a magician and disappear!
However, she is suddenly clocked by a globed universe and sees Zatanna smirkingly juggling three more before she throws them at her, with Scarlet Witch getting struck by all three universes. Reaching the limits of her anger, she screams and unleashes all of her power to destroy many universes. Zatanna, however, forms a barrier to defend against the destructive power before chanting another spell.
Zatanna: ecruos sti tsniaga thgim lacigam siht—
Scarlet Witch: ENOUGH! NO MORE SOUND!!!
Zatanna: —esrever dna tcatni niamer noitcelfer fo reirrab siht teL.
("Let this barrier of reflection remain intact; and reverse this magical might against its source.")
Her reality-warping power is bolstered even further by her slow loss of sanity, with the multiversal singularity occurring being enough to overcome her opponent's barrier. Zatanna, however, teleports away from inside the blast despite this. As Scarlet Witch calms down slightly, she hears an echoing laugh in her head.
Zatanna: Hahaha... A disappearing act was the first thing dad ever taught me. And for my final trick: sehctiw erom oN!
A blue aura surrounds the Scarlet Witch, with her realizing what Zatanna said backwards after a few different camera angles to show Wanda being depowered.
Zatanna: No more witches.
The Scarlet Witch then gets trapped in a box, and by moving a saw with her mind, Zatanna cuts the box in half. Zatanna then reappears on the stage, and makes Wanda's halved body appear for the applauding audience to see.
Zatanna: And that's our show, ladies and germs! Hehe!

Boomstick: Now that's a magic trick that's to die for!
Wiz: Analyzing this matchup was like walking on a tightrope, it could fall either way at any point.
Boomstick: Because, at the end of the day, both these ladies could do basically anything with their magic. All they had to do was think and shit would happen! They were totally even! At her peak, Wanda was able to threaten the stability of all creation.
Wiz: And at Zatanna's best, she was able to hold back Pralaya, who could do the exact same thing. And despite some differences, the omniversal cosmologies of Marvel and DC Comics are roughly equivalent in size and scope. All that was left for us to look at was their weaknesses.
Boomstick: While both were as powerful as one another, Wanda needed to tap into the Life Force to reach that pinnacle, and doing so threatened her sanity.
Wiz: Let's take a closer look at the events surrounding House of M, where Wanda's powers were at their maximum.
Boomstick: Despite admitting that she was way stronger, Doctor Strange managed to get the best of Wanda with a cool head and a spell that briefly knocked her out cold.
Wiz: His wits against her mental instability were enough to turn the tide.
Boomstick: To be clear, this instability definitely wouldn't affect her power. She was still strong enough to create a completely new alternate reality and then erase it just as easily. What it would do is leave her open.
Wiz: Also, take her "No More Mutants" spell. As insanely powerful as it was to affect the whole of Marvel's creation, it wasn't entirely successful. There was still a tiny portion of Earth's mutant population left unaffected, likely due to interference from Strange and Emma Frost.
Boomstick: Against Zatanna, who is just as strong and not losing her mind, she wouldn't be able to afford that kind of lapse, even for an instant.
Wiz: On the other hand, Zatanna has managed to maintain her willpower fighting foes just as strong as the Scarlet Witch, so she didn't have the same kind of exploitable weakness.
Boomstick: And remember, she doesn't actually need to say her spells backwards.
Wiz: It helps with her concentration, but all her spells come from her mental impulses, just like Wanda. She's consistently pulled off non-verbal spells in the past, even against beings as strong as Pralaya.
Boomstick: In the end, Zee definitely had enough experience fighting smart and keepin' on her toes to hang with Wanda long enough to get in a finishing blow.
We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.
Wiz: While there were definitely versions of this battle that could have ended with Wanda victorious, Zatanna's cooler head and effortless magic allowed her to prevail.
Boomstick: I guess you could say Wanda never saw it coming, and Zatanna "Maxim-off'd" her.
We cut to the "Winner" card.
Wiz: The winner is Zatanna.

Original Track
Spellaholics Synonymous
by Brandon Yates |
Composition
The track for this fight is "Spellaholics Synonymous" by Brandon Yates. It is an instrumental, mystical-sounding track with orchestral instruments, intense percussion, chimes, and feminine vocal chants. The intro motif from "A Strange Fate" can also be heard at the start and end of the track.
Title
The title references a quote of Zatanna's: "I'm a spellaholic," from Seven Soldiers: Zatanna #1, as well as both combatants' prowess with magic in general. It's also a play on the name of the Alcoholics Anonymous support group, likely as a nod to Wanda's mental instability.
Cover Art
The cover art done by John Mitchell depicts Zatanna's wand tapping her hat, with blue cards and sparkles coming out of it, as well as red smoke that represents Scarlet Witch.
Trivia
Production
- The core connections between Scarlet Witch and Zatanna are that they are both comic book superheroines who are some of the strongest magic users in their universe, use a unique type of magic that can do almost anything (Chaos Magic and Logomancy, respectively), and are among the most powerful members of their superhero teams (the Avengers and the Justice League, respectively). In addition:
- Both belong to a race of superpowered individuals (mutants and Homo Magi, respectively), are part of a family of people with superpowers (including Wanda's (Earth-616) mother, Maximoff uncle, brother, niece, twin sons, and also prior to the retcon, her father and half-sister and Zatanna's father, mother] and Zatara cousin) and descend from a long line of people who have magical abilities (various Scarlet Witches/Warlocks and Homo Magi magicians, respectively).
- Both have been romantically involved with another prominent member of one of their teams (Vision] and John Constantine, respectively).
- Both were created in the year 1964.
- Both have previously crossed over in JLA/Avengers #2, in which they were able to sense each other and also briefly fought.
- This is the first episode where its YouTube version has an ad in between the combatants' analyses.
- This is the second episode whose track references a previous one (in this case being A Strange Fate), after Madara VS Aizen, and with the next five being Deku VS Asta, Gogeta VS Vegito, Darth Vader VS Obito Uchiha, Goku VS Superman (2023), and Omni-Man VS Bardock.
- This episode makes a cameo appearance in Martian Manhunter VS Silver Surfer, as a photo of Zatanna accidentally summoning Scarlet Witch at the beginning of the fight can be seen amongst the photos on John Jones' desk.
Easter Eggs
- The front of the cards that Zatanna's rabbits turn into is based on the designs of the cards from Death Battle: The Game.
- Blake Belladonna can be briefly seen on one of them.
- Zatanna shouting "Presentation!" while towering over Scarlet Witch in blue light is similar to a scene in the film Megamind, where Megamind did the same thing to Tighten. Additionally, both opposing characters ask a question regarding the difference between them and their opponent in the scene prior.
- According to Liam Swan, who wrote the episode, the reference to Megamind was coincidental, and he was surprised how many people took it as a hint towards Gru VS Megamind, which was never in production for Season 9 and would not be confirmed until years later.[citation needed]
- Zatanna breaking the fourth wall by reaching her hand past the borders of the screen is likely a reference to her doing the same thing with comic panels.
- Scarlet Witch's "NO MORE SOUND!" line and Zatanna's line of "No more witches." are obvious references to Scarlet Witch's "No more mutants." quote and spell from House of M.
- The pose that Zatanna strikes near the end where she teleports Scarlet Witch back to the stage is quite similar to her pose as depicted in her bishoujo statue created by Kotobukiya.
