Spider-Man VS Deku is the 198th episode of Death Battle, featuring Miles Morales from Marvel Comics and Izuku Midoriya from the My Hero Academia series in a battle between teenage successors of famous superheroes. Miles was voiced by Chrystian Marte and Deku was voiced by John van Doren.
Interlude
Miles turns invisible, and as Deku tries to locate him while swinging with Blackwhip, Miles suddenly reappears to deliver an uppercut. The screen pauses and grays out as Ringmaster shouts...
The screen then statics into playing the Death Battle intro.
Wiz & Boomstick by Brandon Yates |
Wiz: Miles Morales vs. Izuku Midoriya.
Boomstick: Spider-Man vs. Deku! He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Spider-Man
This Is Our History by Universal Production Music |
Boomstick: All right, let's take this from the top again. This is Peter Parker. He was bitten by a radioactive spider, and for who knows how long, he's been the one and only Spider-Man.
Wiz: A friendly neighbor to all of New York City. In a universe filled with super soldiers, hulking green goliaths, and world-shattering gods, Spider-Man is there to look out for the little guy.
Boomstick: But in a multiverse of infinite possibilities, that doesn't always last forever, like in Universe 1610, when NYC's webhead got iced on the job.
Neon Time Traveller by James Terence Skehan |
Wiz: The city was left without its protector, but fortunately, Peter wasn't the only one who got bit. Enter Miles Morales, a young teen from Brooklyn just trying to figure out his place in the world, and now, he had it thrust upon him.
Boomstick: The Canon Event to start all Canon Events! Now it was Miles' turn to be the hero the Big Apple needed, and he had all the usual spider-kit to help him out.
Wiz: This spider carried the Oz formula, a genetics-enhancing serum that granted Miles superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to alter his body's electron attraction to crawl along any surface.
Boomstick: And you can't forget that classic Spider-Sense, an internal warning system that lets Miles know about incoming threats so he can react ahead of time. He even got an upgrade that acts like a radar, letting him "see" through stuff.
Wiz: But no Spider-Person is complete without their web-shooters. Given to him by Peter's Aunt May, these webs have all sorts of applications, between swinging, grabbing, restraining, projectile-ing, and being made into constructs.
Boomstick: Not having Peter around to show him the ropes made things a lot tougher, though, and between mishaps with wall-crawling and web-slinging, Miles got off to a rocky start.
Wiz: Like any typical teenager, he had a lot of self-doubt. Could he keep up in school? What was the right way to talk to girls?
Boomstick: And how could he live up to being Spider-Man when one of the villains he had to face turned out to be his very own uncle? Makes family dinner so awkward; all that "Gah, I'm trying to kill ya!" stuff...
Wiz: Fortunately, Miles had a leg up on every other superhero known to man.
Boomstick: LIVING PARENTS! Better yet, loving parents! They supported him when things got tough, even if they didn't always see eye-to-eye, and thanks to them, he learned that the best way to be Spider-Man wasn't to do it like Peter, but to do it his own way.
Wiz: And it helped that this particular spider had a bit more to its bite than Peter's. Miles has a variety of unique powers, like invisibility and Venom.
Boomstick: Not like... Tom Hardy, though it is weird to give your main power the same name as one of your bad guys. Come on, Spidey! Branding is important!
Wiz: Miles can harness his own bioelectric energy and weaponize it, which is especially effective against individuals with genetic mutations.
Boomstick: Punching, absorbing, blasting, mega-blasting! Hell, he can even make electric constructs out of this stuff, like bio-webbing and a damn sword! Jeez, what kind of spider was this?
Wiz: It's not entirely science fiction. Studies have shown that certain species of spiders, such as the Linyphiidae, have a process known as "ballooning"; by spinning a thread of their silk, they can use the Earth's natural electric fields to fly, traveling up to hundreds of miles, no pun intended.
Boomstick: Ugh... Well, whatever kind of bite it was, it gave Miles the edge he needed to find his worth as Spider-Man.
Wiz: Miles can dodge gunshots, missiles, and lightning bolts. He's survived all sorts of beatings, including a building exploding on top of him.
Boomstick: OG Spidey could lift buildings and dodge light-speed attacks, and Miles is more than a match for him.
Wiz: Like the time he absorbed the energy of a bomb that was going to vaporize Harlem, a blast that would have equaled 15 million tons of TNT.
Boomstick: He's gotten kudos from a ton of older heroes, too, becoming a member of the New Ultimates and the Avengers. He even helped form the Champions, a team of teenage superheroes with the likes of Ms. Marvel and Ironheart.
Wiz: The king of Wakanda himself even suited him up with some Wakandan Vibranium.
Boomstick: The same stuff as T'Challa's own super suit. This super-rare and tough metal can absorb kinetic energy and vibrational impacts.
Wiz: It helps to regulate Miles' Venom powers, too, allowing him to better control his electrical output.
Boomstick: The Vibranium is thinner to better fit his acrobatic fighting style, but it can still shake off most fatal attacks like they're nothing. This stuff is tough enough that Deadpool's swords have shattered against it.
Wiz: Though, it's not as durable as, say, Captain America's shield, and enough kinetic energy will overload it.
Boomstick: Don't be near it when it does, or you'll end up like the Falcon here when he used his Vibranium wings to stop a bomb that was going to blow up New York City. That's twice now! Does any other city have to deal with this stuff?
Wiz: But when Vibranium and spider-powers still aren't enough, Miles can push his electrical output into overdrive.
Boomstick: Giving him huge boosts in strength and speed, and making him a whole lot zappier. It's your classic shōnen power-up, and... he knows it, too. He's... a bit of a weeb, and, uh, has a thing for mimicking some favorites.
You Know Why I'm Here (Instrumental) by Oliver Grey |
Wiz: Despite his initial insecurities, Miles has more than managed to live up to his predecessor, no longer standing in his shadow, but side-by-side.
Boomstick: Literally! His universe got blown up, and he was sent to the main 616 timeline, along with his family. And now, it's him and Peter as a pair of Spider-Bros.
Wiz: He's even become one of the big players of the Spider-Verse, teaming up with all sorts of other Spider-Variants to defend the multiverse.
Boomstick: There's anime Spider-People, robot Spider-People, dinosaur Spider-People, spider Spider-People; a whole lot of them, each with their own way of getting the job done. Miles even led them into battle against the Inheritors, a bunch of interdimensional vampire assholes!
Wiz: This is what Stan Lee was proudest of in his favorite superhero: regardless of who they were, any sort of person could wear the mask and do the right thing. For so long as we stay true to ourselves and help others in our own unique ways, then anyone can be a hero.
Deku
Hello And Hello! by Gregor F. Narholz |
Wiz: But what is a hero? To the citizens of Japan, there was no one more synonymous with the word than their Symbol of Peace, All Might.
Boomstick: The big Numero Uno! With a smile on his face, he could save anyone and win any fight, no matter what!
Wiz: Or so it seemed. After a battle with his arch-nemesis, All For One, All Might was grievously injured. His time as a beacon of hope was coming to an end, and he would need to find someone to pass on the torch.
The Road to Success by Thierry Laurent Caroubi |
Boomstick: In this world, most human beings evolved to have their own individual superpowers, or "Quirks". But not everyone is lucky enough to get one, like this kid named Izuku Midoriya, or as local bully Bakugo liked to call him, the good-for-nothing "Deku".
Wiz: Izuku wanted to save people just like All Might, but even his idol told him that he would have to give up on his dreams.
Boomstick: Forever the beta male in the shadow of Bakugo and his sigma Quirk, until he got the chance to "alpha" up and lend his rival a helping hand, proving himself worthy of All Might's torch.
Jungle Run by Didier Lean Rachou |
Wiz: And so, after months of training, Izuku was granted All Might's Quirk, One For All. This power allows him to boost his strength to incredible heights, using it for smashing attacks named after specific U.S. locales... and a soccer club.
Boomstick: Or "football", as they call it.
Wiz: Straight punches, spikes, even finger flicks; One For All is the ultimate in strength-enhancing Quirks.
Boomstick: The first time he used it, Izuku destroyed this giant robot in a single blow, on accident! Too bad it wasn't the only thing he destroyed, though... Damn, that looks like it hurts.
Wiz: One For All's power was so great that the recoil would shatter Izuku's limbs when he used it. In the hands of an improper vessel, One For All could cause their body to explode! So Izuku would need to continuously train to master it at his Hero Academia.
Boomstick: ...Say that again.
Wiz: U.A. High!
Boomstick: Here, he'd be inspired by girly-pop Uraraka to turn his zero name into his hero name, becoming "the Deku who always does his best".
Wiz: Something that he... may have taken too far.
Boomstick: When it came to saving people, "Do Your Best" here had a bad habit of putting others way before himself. Sure, everyone else was OK, but he'd be good-for-nothing all over again if he got himself paralyzed.
Wiz: So, to cut down on his hospital bill, he developed Full Cowling. Instead of using his Quirk in short bursts, he would continuously spread the energy across his body at low percentages, using it for acrobatics inspired by Bakugo's explosive movements.
Boomstick: And with that new thinking came a new fighting style: Shoot Style! To use a stronger limb that'd be less likely to break, Deku took a page from nerd emoji Ida's book and switched to focusing on kicks to pack in more of a punch. Yeah...!
Wiz: And that power would be needed. After a climactic battle with All For One, All Might would be forced into retirement, just a few months into Deku's training. Now it was his turn to face this demon lord.
Boomstick: But he didn't have to do it alone. Just as All Might had passed One For All onto Deku, it had been passed onto All Might by his master, and onto her by her master. One For All was a power that was built upon for generations.
Wiz: The Quirks of the previous users of One For All manifested in Deku, along with their spirits, or "Vestiges", to help him in his battle against All For One.
Boomstick: Blackwhip gives him energy tendrils to swing around and restrain foes. They can also brace his arms and manually control his muscles if he can't move.
Wiz: Float allows him to soar high into the sky. By combining it with control blasts of pressurized air, he can effectively fly.
Boomstick: Danger Sense detects incoming threats and unease, letting Deku react in advance, though it's mostly like an alarm bell and doesn't tell him specifics like location or number of threats. Hmm... familiar?
Wiz: Smokescreen lets him... uh... create a smokescreen. But he can use it at full blast to create... a bigger smokescreen!
Boomstick: That's swell and all, but the real meat is in Fa Jin. After building up kinetic energy within his body, Deku can unleash it for bursts of strength and speed.
Wiz: He's combined it with Blackwhip to create the powerful Blackchain binding attack, and can use it in conjunction with Full Cowling to achieve faux-100%, equaling All Might's full level of power without any recoil.
Boomstick: He once used it to out-speed a bullet shot by Lady Nagant, a former Hero turned Villain who has a sniper rifle... for an arm! Wiz, I... I think I'm in love...
Wiz: Nagant's bullet once crossed a distance of around 215 kilometers within a fraction of a second. That's 6,700 times faster than sound, and Deku was moving so fast, the bullet seemed like it was standing still.
Unbreakable (Instrumental) by Andrew Michael Britton & Wayne Anthony Murray |
Boomstick: And he can go even faster than that with his final Quirk, Gearshift.
Wiz: By touching a target, he can control its speed without abiding by the laws of inertia. He can slow down foes to leave them frozen in the air, or move so fast, he can punch multiple times in an instant.
Boomstick: Even All For One's own protégé, Shigaraki, couldn't track him, and this is a dude who can catch light-speed laser beams!
Wiz: It does have a time limit, though. After five minutes of continuous use, Deku's body will catch up to his speed, suffocating him as his cells become unable to take in oxygen.
Boomstick: Not nearly as bad as One For All was suffocating him, though. He's been doing ALL of this shit in just the tenth grade! I hadn't even figured out you can breathe through your nose at that point...
Wiz: The pressure of having to save his friends, the country, the entire world, weighed on Deku, so he left U.A. to fight this war alone.
Boomstick: But alone was never where Deku fought best. Having come from nothing, his admiration for his peers gave him strength, just as they admired his strength and desire to help others. Even Bakugo came around to him!
Wiz: So when it came time to finally put that demon lord back in Hell, his classmates, teachers, mom, friends, e-enemy, and everyone else supported and cheered him on. Because that was the greatest threat to All For One's reign all along.
Boomstick: Not All Might, not Deku, not even One For All itself; just people helping each other out. And with their help, Deku defeated All For One once and for all, blowing a hole in this huge storm and parting the skies for a brighter future.
Wiz: Though, he did lose his Quirk and have to retire from hero work, getting a regular 9-to-5 as a teacher, passing on his knowledge to the next generation, just like every user of One For All before him.
Boomstick: Some might say he peaked in high school... if not for the sick new armor he eventually got to go back to kicking butt! He even made it all the way back near the top of the rankings!
Wiz: All with the help of his friends. For so long as we keep reaching out our hands to help those in need, everyone can be a hero.
Prelude
Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set. We've run the data through all possibilities.
Boomstick: IT'S TIME FOR A DEATH BATTLEEE!!!
Death Battle
The scene starts with a comic book flair set in New York City. Miles soars between skyscrapers in his Spider-Man suit, web-swinging as he patrols the bustling streets below. Suddenly, his Spider-Sense flares, drawing his attention to a nearby wall. To his surprise, another figure in a superhero costume comes into view: Deku, gliding and swinging across the city using his Blackwhip.
The comic book flair is left behind as Deku continues swinging through the city, with Miles trailing close behind, approaching from the left. Feeling a presence nearby, Deku glances over his right shoulder. Spotting Miles to his side, he hears him call out as the two heroes keep swinging side-by-side between the buildings.
Miles: Yo, you're more Man and less Spider than usual.
Deku: Whoa. I was looking for you. Care to show me what you can do?
Miles: Alright, new guy. First lesson: Don't watch the mouth...
Mid-swing, Miles let go of his web and pointed to his mouth before suddenly vanishing. Activating his invisibility, he caught Deku off guard, reappearing with a swift uppercut. Thanks to his Danger Sense, Deku narrowly dodges the strike at the last second with a backflip.
Miles: Watch the hands!
Deku: Now watch mine. Delaware... SMASH!
As he gets a chance to recover, Deku takes aim with one of his Air Force gloves and shoots multiple Delaware Smashes at Miles, who effortlessly dodges them. Miles then pulls himself towards Deku and follows up with a Venom-charged punch, upon which Deku counters with a axe-kick Manchester Smash. He then uses a Detroit Smash to punch him back a few feet, but the Vibranium suit Miles was wearing absorbs the impact of the blow.
Miles: Let's try that one more time.
Swinging upwards through more buildings, Miles leads Deku into a big web in-between two radio towers. He gets himself caught as Miles prepares to slingshot towards his adversary with two web ropes.
Miles: Guess who?
Miles slingshots himself at full force, ramming his feet into Deku's abdomen and launching him several feet away. Deku tries to cover his tracks by creating a big smokescreen.
Deku: (I can't use my full power here. Gotta take this somewhere else.)
He then uses Fa Jin and flexes his leg to generate kinetic energy, but soon gets caught by Miles, who the smokescreen had no effect on. Deku, having detecting Miles' fist with Danger Sense, grabs his wrist to stop his attack, but out of nowhere, the young Spider shoots a web into his face, blinding him.
Deku: Gross!
Deku, trying to clean his face, accidentally crushes the web shooter on Miles' wrist, much to his unawareness.
Miles: You got skills, man. I like that.
Miles unleashes a Venom Blast in Deku's face to blow him away. Deku, finally managing to clean his face of any webs, takes a page out of Miles' notebook and launches two Blackwhips in a slingshot style, ready to use his Fa Jin-powered kinetic energy.
Miles thrusts his hand forward to launch another web, but came to the realization that his opponent had broken his shooter.
Miles: ¡Oh, mierda! (Oh, shit!)
As the young Spider was slowly falling, Deku uses his kinetic energy against the side of a building and slingshots himself at full force, ramming into Miles, who screams as they both zoom past the Statue of Liberty and fly at high speed out of the city.
They eventually make it to an abandoned city that was known as Really Old York City, upon which Deku lets go of Miles and uses his Blackchain ability to swing around a nearby destroyed building. Miles hangs on the side of another building to recover, but takes notice as Deku quickly lassoes the building...
Deku: I moved us to an abandoned part of the city so we can go all out.
...and pulls the top of it off...
Deku: Because I always do my best!
...before kicking the whole thing towards Miles.
Miles, undeterred, shoots Venom webs from his fingers and launches himself through the building, dodging in-between the bars and girders. He finally reaches the end of the building, jumping out as it crashes below, and launching a Venom-charged axe kick at Deku, who catches it. However, Miles quickly recovers and moves to clash with Deku's own axe kick with a punch, blowing each other away.
Miles lands on a midair panel while Deku lands on the ground, activating his Gearshift Quirk.
Miles: If I'm gonna do my best...
Miles becomes fully charged with Venom power and goes into his Overdrive form as Deku activates Full Cowl 120%, jumping upward at high speed.
Miles: I gotta do my own thing!
The young Spider leaps downwards with a backflip towards Deku, with more debris flying into the air, then creates a sword out of his Venom power. Deku attempts a surprise attack as he dashes behind Miles, but the young Spider detects it coming and blocks his assault. Deku pulls himself upward with Blackwhip and hits Miles, then the Spider grabs him with his Venom webs and spins, flinging him away. Deku hits some nearby debris and flings himself back around.
Deku: Sero was right, your Quirk is amazing!
Miles: Amazing is my buddy... They call me the Ultimate Spider-Man!
They clash a few times before Miles charges up a Venom-charged beam similar to Goku's iconic Kamehameha and fires it at Deku, who dodges it. Deku takes a moment to analyze Miles.
Deku: (His suit has shock absorption, not nullification... so it's got a limit.)
As Deku analyzes his opponent, he dodges a few more of Miles' electric beams, but gets caught off guard by the last one, hitting him towards more nearby debris. He throws more broken building pieces at Miles in an attempt to trap him, but the young Spider bursts through the trap with a Venom Mega Blast to free himself.
Miles then charges up a final attack similar to Sasuke's Chidori while Deku prepares his own final attack as well.
Miles: ¡¡Un salto... DE FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! (A leap... OF FAAAAAAAAIIIIIIITH!!)
The two leap towards each other...
Deku: GO BEYOND!!
...and clash their attacks in unison, resulting in a huge eruption of electric energy.
Deku: PLUUUUUS..... ULTRAAAAA!
But Deku powers through the Venom and throws a barrage of One For All-charged punches. Miles' Vibranium suit struggles to absorb every blow, upon which the suit starts to overload with kinetic energy. Deku looks up in realization that his attack was too much for Miles' suit to handle, but before Deku could do anything to stop it, Miles' body glows a bright orange as he screams in agony, promptly exploding into a large Venom web in the sky.
After the web-shaped explosion, Deku is sent flying and tumbles onto the ground, all battle-worn and exhausted. As the battle comes to an end, the scene transitions into a black-and-white manga page. Struggling to his feet and with remorse on his voice, Deku looks up at the sky, lifting his left hand toward the lingering glow of the explosion, a gesture of respect towards the hero he just fought.
Deku: Spider-Man... You really are... The Ultimate.
Results
Boomstick: Vaya con dios, Araña joven... (Go with God, young Spider...)
Wiz: Let's start by talking about their superpowers, which matched up quite evenly. Unsurprisingly, given the not-so-subtle inspiration for Deku's Quirks, though they did have some edges over the other.
Boomstick: The Spider-Sense gave Miles more insight on his surroundings and threats than Danger Sense, which has been worked around before.
Wiz: This meant Miles' invisibility was harder for Danger Sense to detect when he wasn't attacking, while the Spider-Sense's radar system allowed him to find Deku in a smokescreen. But Izuku's other Quirks granted him advantages of his own.
Boomstick: Float was a lot more mobile than webs, and Fa Jin gave a bigger boost in strength than Venom did.
Boomstick: Since both had some advantages and disadvantages, we're going to call superpowers a tie.
Wiz: Next up, speed. Scaling to Peter, Miles could dodge light-speed attacks, which actually outpaced Izuku moving faster than that sniper bullet. Fortunately for Deku, though, that wasn't his best.
Boomstick: Thanks to Gearshift, Deku could speed himself up to match Miles the same way he did to the light-catching Shigaraki. Even worse for Spidey, one touch from Gearshift could freeze him in place and make dodging totally impossible. So, speed goes to Deku.
Wiz: As for skill, Deku was incredibly talented at analyzing an opponent's abilities and coming up with strategies on the fly.
Boomstick: But, Miles' powers and fighting style gave Deku few immediate openings.
Wiz: Deku may have received more formal training at U.A., but he was ultimately only active in hero work for a little under a year.
Boomstick: Meanwhile, Miles has been handling everything from neighborhood crooks to multiverse-ending gods for significantly longer.
Wiz: It's close, but with his greater experience, skill goes to Miles. And that means the biggest deciding factor is raw strength.
Boomstick: And that was no contest. Miles absorbing the energy of that bomb was nothing to scoff at, but overwhelming power is what One For All is all about.
Wiz: When Deku defeated All For One, the energy needed to part those clouds with his punch had a yield of 362 billion tons of TNT, smashing the bomb Miles absorbed out of the water.
Boomstick: But it wasn't as simple as that. Miles is wearing a Vibranium suit, after all. So the question wasn't necessarily who was stronger; it was if Miles' suit was tough enough to continuously absorb Deku's blows.
Wiz: When the Falcon protected New York from that city-destroying blast, it had a yield of 546 megatons. Impressive, but Deku defeating All For One was still over 600 times stronger than Vibranium's limit.
Boomstick: And Deku did that with One For All's embers, not the full package.
Wiz: And remember, the Vibranium in Miles' suit was much thinner than what Falcon and Black Panther had, making it unlikely it could absorb as strong of a blast.
Boomstick: It's there to provide more protection, sure, but there was no way it could survive all of what Deku could dish out.
Wiz: In this superpowered battle, it was Izuku's overwhelming speed and immense strength that made him the winning hero.
Boomstick: And the "Morales" of the story is...
We cut to the "Winner" card.
Wiz: The winner is Deku.
Original Track
Composition
The track for this fight is "You Say Danger" by Brandon Yates ft. Tre Watson. It is an electronic rap track with hip-hop beats from the Spider-Verse movies and heroic trumpets from My Hero Academia's orchestrals that features a lyrical battle between Spider-Man and Deku, with a majority of the lyrics reflecting on their roles as the next in line to the heroes they've succeeded. EDM synths also briefly play when Miles goes Overdrive. Additionally, the opening notes of "Strongest Alive" (which gets name dropped during Izuku's solo verse) can be heard at the start of the track and the start of Miles and Izuku's shared verse after the synth the solo, and the recurring intro riff of "Watts Up Danger" can be heard during Deku's verse, the Spanish section of Spider-Man's verse, and the end of the track.
Tre portrays Spider-Man and Brandon portrays Deku.
Title
The title references "You Say Run" from My Hero Academia and "What's Up Danger" from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Cover Art
The cover art done by John Mitchell depicts the left half of Deku's Costume Epsilon mask and the right half of Miles' Vibranium suit masks caught in a spider web glowing yellow from Miles' Overdrive form. Electricity is also emitting from half of their masks with Deku's mask emitting green electricity from One for All and Miles' mask emitting yellow electricity from Overdrive.

Trivia
Production
- The core connections between Miles Morales and Izuku Midoriya is that both are highly intelligent teenagers, who are the successors to legendary superheroes (Peter Parker/Spider-Man and All Might, respectively). Both started out as brilliant but unassuming young men until after a series of events where both end up in the possession of a great power in the same vein as their predecessors (Miles was bitten by a radioactive spider, same as the original Peter Parker's acquisition of power, while Deku received One for All from All Might by eating a strand of his hair). In relation to this, both of their predecessors had pyrrhic victories (the Peter Parker of Miles' dimension died from a fatal wound in a truck explosion after fighting Norman Osborn, while All Might lost One for All during his rematch against All for One), requiring the two to step up as their successors. In addition:
- Both acquired different powers from their predecessors (Miles’ spider bite granted his Venom abilities, while Izuku's One For All gives him the Quirks of his predecessors).
- Both have a friendship and love interest in allied superheroines with a white, black and pink color scheme (Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider and Ochaco Uraraka/Uravity, respectively) of which they possess similar capabilities to theirs through powers (Gwen is able to produce Bioelectricity like Miles, while Ochaco's quirk, Zero Gravity, is also able to make herself levitate like the quirk Float) and equipment (Gwen's Venom symbiote can make her invisible like Miles' Spider-Camouflage, while Ochaco's grappling hooks are inspired by Izuku's Blackwhip).
- Both are members of young superhero teams (The Champions and Class 1-A, respectively) who have helped, on many occasions, save their worlds from dangerous supervillains and catastrophic events.
- Both have archenemies who are dark and unempathetic versions of themselves (Raneem Rashad/The Rabble and Tomura Shigaraki, respectively) who develop a hatred towards them and the desire to eliminate them for personal reasons (Miles taking the spot at Brooklyn Visions Academy that Raneem was hoping to get, while Shigaraki is hellbent on destroying Izuku due to him being the successor of All Might).
- Both have taken part in mass wars that determine the fate of their worlds (The second superhero Civil War and God War for Miles and the Paranormal Liberation War and Final War for Izuku) in which they played crucial roles (Miles challenged the ethics of predestination and heroism after defeating Ares as Kwaku Anansi's champion and herald, while Izuku managed to finally defeat both Shigaraki and All For One, both leaders of the League of Villains).
- The author of My Hero Academia, Kohei Horikoshi has stated that Spider-Man was an inspiration when writing his series. Boomstick previously made this connection in Deku's first episode, where he compared Deku's Blackwhip and Danger Sense Quirks to Spider-Man's Web-Shooters and Spider-Sense, respectively, and also labeling the author as the "biggest Spidey fan ever".
- Spider-Man himself made a cameo alongside other superheroes at the start of My Hero Academia's first chapter.
- Horikoshi would later draw Spider-Man himself alongside Deku and All Might as part of a collaboration with Marvel Comics.
- In an instance of the Death Battle Curse striking, 10 days after the episode's reveal, a new My Hero Academia game titled My Hero Academia: All’s Justice was announced.
- Miles' analysis preview was originally titled "Miles Morales beats every other superhero at one thing", though this was slightly updated to properly capitalize all words besides "beats" and "in" before being changed completely to "Why does Miles Morales have ELECTRIC Powers?" over the next few days.
- Due to "You Say Danger" using Spanish lyrics for the first four lines of Miles' solo verse, this is the fourth episode to have its track feature the use of a language other than English, after Hulk VS Broly, Kratos VS Asura, and Shigaraki VS Mahito.
- This is the 10th episode whose track references a previous one (or in this case, two: "Watts Up Danger" and "Strongest Alive"), after Madara VS Aizen, Scarlet Witch VS Zatanna, Deku VS Asta, Gogeta VS Vegito, and Darth Vader VS Obito Uchiha, Goku VS Superman (2023), Omni-Man VS Bardock, Simon the Digger VS Kyle Rayner, and Goku VS Superman 2.
- This is the third episode whose track references more than one previous original track, after Gogeta VS Vegito and Goku VS Superman (2023).
- This is the fifth episode to be dubbed in more than one language,[1] after Goku VS Superman (2023), Kratos VS Asura, Ghost Rider VS Spawn, and Shigaraki VS Mahito, and with the next two being Wile E. Coyote VS Tom Cat and Hulk VS Godzilla.
- In some "Behind the Scenes" posts on Twitter, MORØ revealed that Miles and Deku's models come from Fortnite and My Hero One's Justice, respectively.[2][3]
- Additionally, Miles' model actually belongs to Miguel O'Hara, with his head replaced with Miles' from his own Fortnite model to put together the Vibranium suit, whereas his mask's eyes were added as 2D assets.[2]
- Deku's model has its head removed so that MORØ could animate a new head for the fight using 2D assets, and the models textures were redone to match MORØ's typical animation style.[3]
Easter Eggs
- In Miles' analysis, Boomstick's first line refers to the famous recurring gag from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where each new Spider-Person starts introducing themselves by saying "All right, let's do this one last time" before giving a short recap of their origin story. It also befits this episode being his second appearance on Death Battle.
- This is referenced again with Miles' "Let's try this one more time" line in the fight after he gets hit with Deku's Manchester and Detroit Smashes.
- Two of Miles' dislikes in his "Background" slide are references:
- "Gamespot" refers to their review of the game Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, in which the infamous "exaggerated swagger of a Black teen" phrase is quoted that has since become a meme.
- "Paul" refers to Paul Rabin, a Spider-Man character who debuted in Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 6) #1 and is notoriously hated by fans for replacing Peter as Mary Jane's boyfriend.
- The second-to-last thing listed in Miles' "Feats" slide is "Won an Oscar", naturally referring to how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the award for Best Animated Feature at the 2018 Academy Awards.
- in Deku's "Background" slide, the last thing listed is "Romantic interest: oh, you know... one of them?", refers to the fact that Deku has a large number of ships with different characters from the My Hero Academia cast.
- When Wiz states that Izuku had to train continuously to master One For All at "his Hero Academia" during the latter's analysis, Boomstick tells him to "Say that again" while a clip of Mister Fantastic from the 2015 Fantastic Four film is shown saying the same line. The aforementioned scene is used as a meme that has recently become popular again due to the movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
- The last thing listed in Deku's "Feats" slide is "Can hit you...really hard...", referencing Asta's first line from Deku's previous episode that Deku would later repeat to himself in the fight's climax.
- The first clip used for Miles' side of the prelude is this scene from the Community episode "Anthropology 101" that depicts Troy Barnes waking up in Spider-Man pajamas, which ultimately served as the inspiration for Miles' creation as a whole.
- Colorful comic book and monochrome manga panels in reference to Miles' and Deku's respective mediums are utilized thoughout the battle.
- The reason the fight starts is because of Deku looking for Miles to learn some of his abilities, with a later line from him implying that it was because of a conversation with fellow U.A. student Hanta Sero some time prior to the fight. This is a reference to how Sero's Quirk, Tape, functions very similarly to Spider-Man's webs, as well as how Sero deeply respects Spider-Man in general.
- Miles' line to Deku before they actually start fighting, "First lesson: don't watch the mouth... Watch the hands!" is a reference to this moment from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where Peter says nearly the same line as he frees himself from Miles' restraints after having a long conversation with him, as well as this scene from the climax of the movie where Miles repeats the line to Peter himself after stealing the Goober while he wasn't paying attention.
- Miles using his webs to slingshot at Deku after the latter gets caught in the former's webbing is a reference to the killing blow that Peter inflicted on Batman at the end of Batman VS Spider-Man.
- While Miles uses Shoulder Touch on Deku, one frame right before he releases it depicts green light coming from his hand and illuminating everything as sparks form the WhatsApp logo on Miles' chest, referencing the memetic "WhatsApp Danger" image.
- When Miles finds out that one of his Web-Shooters has broken because of Deku and also while he senses the latter's attack, you can see a sign that says "SCAN TO WIN 100,000,000$" with an accompanying QR code. Scanning this code leads to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", thus Rickrolling those who scanned the code out of curiosity.
- Under the same sign, you can see another one depicting the three main members of the HUNTR/X (Rumi, Mira and Zoey) from KPop Demon Hunters, another critically acclaimed film by Sony Pictures Animation.
- The way Deku uses Faux 100% to launch himself at Miles and clothesline him with one of his outstretched arms is a reference to how he did the same thing to save Kai Chisaki from one of Lady Nagant's bullets during their fight.
- The following shot of both combatants speeding past the Statue of Liberty with Miles' delayed scream and the text for it having to catch up with them is a reference to similar moments in the Spider-Verse films.
- Miles' "If I'm gonna do my best... I gotta do my own thing!" line is a reference to this scene from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where Miles says to Spider-Man 2099 that he'll forge his own life path instead of following what other Spider-People have done on theirs.
- The way Miles jumps off the piece of debris he's on to meet up with Deku down below him as he says the latter half of the line and the upside-down shot immediately after that depicts him falling "upward" are references to the famous "Leap of Faith" scene from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with the former shot also doubling as a reference to the way Miles jumps off the construction crane during his origin story recap at the end of the movie.
- Additionally, given this comes after Deku saying "Because I always do my best!", this could also act as a call-back to All Might's "You wanted my best? Here it is!" line from the climax of All Might VS Might Guy that Deku himself would reference in his previous episode.
- Befitting of his otaku nature, two of Miles' attacks in the climax reference iconic anime moves:
- The bioelectric beam that Miles fires at Deku as he calls himself the Ultimate Spider-Man is a reference to the Kamehameha from Dragon Ball, with him charging it up in a similar way.
- The way Miles charges up bioelectricity for his final Venom Punch is a reference to the Chidori from Naruto, specifically how Kakashi charges up lightning for his Raikiri.
- Additionally, the low angle at which this scene is shot is a reference to this moment from Miles Morales: Spider-Man Vol. 2 #31, where Miles charged up the Venom Blast in the same way.
- Deku noting that Miles' Vibranium suit absorbs shocks instead of nullifying them is a reference to All Might's fight with the U.S.J. Nomu, where he noted the same thing about the latter.
- Miles using his Mega Venom Blast to escape the debris Deku encased him in via Gearshift is similar to how he broke free from a similar situation in his fight against Static.
- Miles' death by being overwhelmed from Deku's full power Consecutive Smashes is a reference to how Deku defeated Overhaul at the end of their fight.
- Additionally, his death is displayed in a similar manner to his death against Static (which was an explosion via his Nova Burst attack).
- At the end of the fight, Boomstick says "Vaya con Dios, Araña joven", which roughly translates to "Go with God, young Spider". This is not only a reference to Miles' Puerto Rican heritage, but it's also a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, as Doctor Eggman says "Vaya con Dios, erizo apestoso", which means "Go with God, stinking hedgehog", to Shadow at the end of the movie.
- Miles' solo verse in "You Say Danger" contains a few references, with some being confirmed by Tre Watson:
- The lyric "Look, I'm sure you're really nice, but you can't cut it here in BK, refers to both Miles' birth city of Brooklyn and the fast food chain Burger King; doubling as a reference to the meme of Deku working at a fast food restaurant following the end of the My Hero Academia manga prior to the release of its last two epilogue chapters.[4] This is the first episode to reference the aforementioned meme, with the next one being Hulk VS Godzilla.
- The lyric "And stomp you like some Black Forces and Timbs!" refers to the Nike Air Force 1s and Timberland boots, two shoes that have become symbolic in meme culture for their associations with wild and aggressive behavior and hip hop fashion, respectively, fitting of Miles' Brooklyn origin.[5]
- It also references the infamous kill of Ben 10 VS Green Lantern, where Green Lantern killed Ben Tennyson with a Timberland boot construct.[5]
- The last line of the verse, "Never forget that I'm him!", references the "Bro Thinks He's Him/I'm Him" meme, where one compares someone (including themselves) to another, usually more impressive person and/or proclaims them to be more impressive than they actually are, with some cases being able to be backed up.
Errors
- In Miles' "Background" slide, GameSpot is spelled as "Gamespot" with a lowercase S.
- In Miles' analysis, when Boomstick states that the former joined the "New Ultimates", an image of the original team he was on is shown, instead of their younger counterpart who called themselves the "New Ultimates".
- The first speech bubble for Deku's final line of the fight notably spells Spider-Man as "Spiderman" without the hyphen, which is something that particular irks 616 Peter.
