Interlude
Wiz & Boomstick
by Brandon Yates |
Wiz: Steven Universe, a superpowered half-human, half-Gem teenager.
Boomstick: And Star Butterfly, wild child princess from another dimension.
Wiz: They've both struggled with their responsibilities to save the world, but when pitted against each other, whose heroics will triumph?
We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.
Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Steven Universe
Wiz: The Diamond Authority was an alien superpower set on conquering the universe for their own gain.
Boomstick: They're literally diamonds. Like, shiny alien rock people.
Wiz: As the most powerful of the Gems, the Diamonds led armies of lesser Gems, including Pearls, Amethysts, and others to prepare planets for destruction by the authority. These armies were trusted to obey.
Boomstick: But they had an enemy rock person, Rose Quartz. She'd been livin' on Earth and really liked the place, so she was leadin' her own group of Gems in rebellion: the Crystal Gems.
Wiz: To which the three Diamonds of the authority responded by trying to destroy every Gem left on Earth.
Boomstick: Uh, that sounds like overkill. But in a huge blast of light, every Gem was corrupted or destroyed, except for Rose and her closest Gems, a Garnet and Pearl. She'd managed to defend them all with her shield.
Wiz: Given the light emanating from this attack and its distance, we can estimate it to be over 843 million tenajoules per second of energy.
Boomstick: Joules? More like jewels, am I right?
Wiz: Uh, that's what I said?
Boomstick: No, like with a W- eh, never mind.
Wiz: Well, now with the Diamonds rebuffed, Rose was able to settle down, and she even met a human she got along with: Greg Universe.
Boomstick: What a badass, I want- I wish my last name was Universe. They got along so well, that one thing led to another, and uh, whoops! Rose had to give up her body so their son could be born.
Wiz: True to his heritage, Steven has many Gem-related powers, since, when Rose gave up her body to create him, she effectively gave him all of her power as well, including her own Gem. And while Steven's a stalwart pacifist, this led to him following in her footsteps to defend Earth from the Diamonds when they inevitably return.
Boomstick: But he's got plenty of ways to defend himself and the others. He can create shields and bubbles to protect from different attacks, use bubbles to teleport things away, and shapeshift to get bigger.
Wiz: He can also control his personal gravity to float or jump as high as he wants, and he can even fuse with other gems, or sometimes a human.
Boomstick: Huh. Wonder what a fusion between us would look like.
Wiz: Uh, fusions tend to result in a more powerful entity than the sum of its parts, but... I'm not sure that would happen.
Boomstick: Yeah, you're right. You wouldn't be able to handle it.
Wiz: Sure. Anyway, as a Gem, Steven is much stronger than an average child. While he doesn't look for conflict, conflict always seem to find him. Like when he's taken on huge monsters, or pushed through the G-forces of faster-than-light travel.
Boomstick: And when he's in a fight, he combines that crazy strength with awesome speed and agility. He can outrun an alien security system with electric, fire, and ice attacks, and he's dodged lasers! Even if he can't get away in time, Steven's survived an entire temple exploding, and taken hits from a bunch of Gems, which is huge! I mean, Garnet once punched so hard, she could split a mountain!
Wiz: Another Gem he's on par with, Lapis, telekinetically lifted the entire ocean into the atmosphere. Boomstick, do you know how heavy the ocean is?
Boomstick: No, do you know how heavy the ocean is?
Wiz: The effort required for that would be anywhere from 92 petatons to over 10 zettatons of TNT.
Boomstick: Man, that's a lot of water. His bubble and shield are also way stronger than they look, since they can defend against attacks from the Diamonds themselves.
We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.
Boomstick: Not even Steven's spit could've helped with that attack. Oh, if you haven't heard, his spit can heal people.
He takes out a wedge of watermelon and eats it.
Wiz: His saliva can even give plants, like fruit, humanoid form. Just spitting out seeds from a watermelon has gotten Steven in quite a bind before.
Boomstick spits out the watermelon in his mouth onto the floor.
Boomstick: That's not gonna pop up and attack me, is it?!
Wiz: N-No, Boomstick, regular watermelons don't attack people, but depending on Steven's emotional state, he has varying control over his... plant based lifeforms.
He pulls out a ray gun and fires at the watermelon on the floor, and it becomes a full melon with a green Wiz head that gurgles. Boomstick panics and blows it to pieces with his shotgun leg, showering Wiz with it.
Boomstick: You gonna eat that?
We cut back to the analysis.
Boomstick: Aside from his spit, Steven's tears have brought people back from the dead. They just turn pink and have powers of their own after. It's weird.
Wiz: Despite not being one to pursue conflict, Steven's been stuck for a while making the best of carrying on Rose's duty. So, his kindness and feelings of responsibility for those around him push him to use those healing abilities whenever he can. He can even mend himself with accelerated healing that lets him fix fractures and minor injuries nearly immediately.
Boomstick: And when Steven's knocked out, he can leave his physical body, sort of like a ghooost! The drawback is, he can't physically interact with anything while he's projecting, but when Steven goes to sleep normally, he can possess other people's bodies. Good luck tryin' to fall asleep in a fight, though. I've tried.
Wiz: But protecting the Earth wasn't the only surprise Steven's mother left for him. As it turns out, she was never actually Quartz at all. She was, in fact, Pink Diamond, one of the heads of the Diamond Authority.
Boomstick: What?
Wiz: Despite being sent to Earth to conquer it, she fell in love with the planet, which led her to give up her title and transform into Rose Quartz. All of this was withheld from Steven for most of his life, as Pearl worried how the truth might change him.
Boomstick: Oh, believe me, parental trauma will take a toll on anyone's mental state. And when Steven gets too overwhelmed, he taps into his latent Diamond abilities, making everything way stronger and way kill-ier.
Wiz: In this, his Pink State, he's so fast, his perception of time slows to a crawl. His bubble and shield become hexagonal and strong enough to crush other Gems. Like when he lost control of his emotions in a fight with Jasper and killed her.
Boomstick: He did bring her back to life with his super tears, but that kinda stuff made him think he was a monster, and he basically turned into a Pink State Godzilla.
Wiz: But this wasn't Steven hulking out all of a sudden. It was the result of a full emotional breakdown after years of stress and trauma.
Boomstick: Luckily, his friends came in clutch, and it worked out okay. But he still risks becoming a monster if he's ever completely emotionally broken.
Wiz: With the support of the Crystal Gems, his dad, and his friends, Steven managed to work through his personal issues, so hopefully he's not faced with becoming a monster ever again.
Boomstick: So that's one less monster to worry about, Tokyo. And since Monster Steven has the same power as his Pink State, just with absolutely no control, Steven's still powerful enough to take on anything in his way.
Wiz: Of course, if it was up to Steven Universe, everyone would just be friends.
Garnet: Garnet.~
Amethyst: Amethyst.~
Pearl: And Pearl.~
Steven: And Steven!
Star Butterfly
Wiz: When Marco met the new exchange student at his school, he thought he was just making a new friend from a different place.
Boomstick: And he definitely didn't think she'd be a magical princess who'd drag him along for all of her crazy adventures.
Wiz: This girl from Mewni-
Boomstick: Mew-what?
Wiz: Was a little weird and a little wild, and on top of bringing magic to Earth, she might've brought along a few extras as well. This displaced heir to the throne and defender against monsters was none other than... Star Butterfly.
Star makes a rainbow, which is then set on fire.
Boomstick: She may have been backed up by generations of magic users before her, and super strong in her own right, but Star wasn't the perfect princess.
Wiz: She would've been sent to the terrifying and personality-draining St. Olga's School for Wayward Princesses, but luckily, Star's parents took one look at that place and decided, "No way, she's goin' to Earth instead".
Boomstick: Y'know, Earth really isn't the best place for her to be practicing magic. We're not used to people casually casting spells here. What'll humans say?
Wiz: Well, since Star is a Mewman-
Boomstick: What the f**k is a Mewman?
Wiz: Eh, that's what the people of Mewni are called. She's already superhuman compared to her peers on Earth; she's survived a blast that leveled the top of Castle Mewni, and can use her wings to help her get out of the way in a pinch.
Boomstick: What, those tiny things? There's no way she can actually fly with 'em. At least she can make a bubble around herself to defend against attacks.
Wiz: Her Butterfly heritage also grants her the Magic Instruction Book. This spell book is incredibly important, as it contains spells created by all the magical rulers of Mewni that came before her. And she creates her own spells, too, like Cupcake Blast, which fires a beam filled with... cupcakes.
Boomstick: Okay, half of these spells don't make any sense. Jelly Bean Hallucination Mist? Starfish Tsunami? What the hell are these names?! I want a Jelly Bean Hallucination Mist. I feel like you could-you'd pay for that at, like, a high-end sauna.
Wiz: Well, they're kind of... self-explanatory. Creating her own spells does mean they can pretty much be anything. Take one of her summons, for example, which are effectively creatures reliant on magic to survive. So, what happens when you combine unicorns, stampedes, and war?
Boomstick: Ooh, I know this one! Warnicorn Stampede! Now I get where Spider with a Top Hat came from.
Wiz: That spider's one of Star's self-professed most powerful summons, with his own minigun to boot.
Boomstick: So, naturally, she can kick monsters' butts with her spells thanks to her magical wand, but she better watch out, 'cause a lot of those monsters wanna use it for themselves.
Wiz: Her wand, combined with her training, means she has some incredible destructive power. She's blasted apart walls, temples, and a throne room. Her mother even said her wand could blow up a universe, and one of her ancestors did exactly that.
Boomstick: Yeah, Star's ancestor Skywynne wanted to make something explode one day, so... why not AN ENTIRE DIMENSION?!
Wiz: And remember that book we mentioned earlier? Skywynne recorded her experience specifically so her successors would know what to do if they also wanted to destroy a dimension. So, Star should be able to do this, since she's known to be an incredibly strong princess, on top of being the heir to the Butterfly spell book.
Boomstick: Speaking of destroying things, her Thermonuclear Butterfly Blast has wrecked a house, and according to Star, her Mega-Explosive Crystal Laser is powerful enough to obliterate planets! But she just likes to use it to play with cats, like a laser pointer.
Wiz: Star has spells for more than just destruction, though, like her Bunny Rabbit Blast, which she's used to catch up to cars. And one of the monsters she's fought, Meteora, has deflected lightning. Being able to fight on par with Meteora means Star's able to reach speeds over Mach 1,000. But if all that wasn't enough for you, once Star went through Mewberty...
Boomstick: Oh, you gotta be kidding me...
Wiz: She learned how to access and control her far more powerful Butterfly form.
We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.
Boomstick: Now that's a set of wings! I just wish peering into her eyes wasn't like peering into the nine layers of hell!
Wiz: It's obviously a stand-in for puberty. Star compared the process of attaining it to, quote, "suddenly looking at boys as if they were made of bacon, like you've never eaten it in your life, and all you want to eat is bacon."
Boomstick: So, what you're saying is, if I eat enough bacon, I can get magical powers?!
He takes out a handful of bacon and begins eating it as Wiz pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration. We cut back to the analysis.
Wiz: Anyway, through her time in various dimensions, fighting monsters and defending her friends, Star's become strong enough on her own that she no longer needs her wand. In fact, her wand only ever served as training wheels to help her harness this magic herself.
Boomstick: Soon enough though, she realized monsters weren't actually the bad guys, so she started to fight for them, instead of against them.
Wiz: This wasn't a popular decision with... Mewmans, but Star knew it was the right choice, and followed through. Unfortunately, the fighting continued, and Star realized in order to truly quell the conflict, she needed to fight magic itself.
Boomstick: So, her mother, her great-whatever grandmother, and Meteora all banded together to cast the Whispering Spell in the Realm of Magic.
Wiz: This spell is designed to "silence" or end magic, and when cast within the Realm of Magic, it destroyed magic itself. All of it.
Boomstick: But, doesn't that mean she killed all the magical creatures across the different dimensions because they need magic to survive?
Wiz: Yeah, we don't talk about that.
Boomstick: Uh, well, after destroying magic, and every magical creature in existence, Star was finally able to bring peace to... Mewni.
Wiz: Star had a lot of growing up to do when she was sent to Earth, but she learned to control her powers, and led her country to peace.
Boomstick: Mmm, mostly.
Wiz: Now, she's truly grown from her chrysalis into... a Butterfly.
Star pops up wearing warrior armor, scaring Marco and Ferguson.
Star: Who's ready for a bloody, bloody bloodbath?!
She slams a mace into the ground and maniacally laughs.

On a beach is a sign reading "SAND CASTLE CONTEST GRAND PRIZE $650". Next to a sand castle with a first-place ribbon, Steven Universe is seen building his own castle, briefly pausing to take a bite out of a watermelon slice. Behind him, Star Butterfly tries building her own, only for the sand structure to come crumbling down.
Frustrated, Star blasts the fallen work with a beam of magic from her wand, causing it to grow to a tremendous height. This skyscraper-like creation can not be sustained, however, and wobbles before leaning over and toppling down on Steven and his art. Steven emerges from the pile of sand.
Steven: Oh no, what happened?
Star: Wait! Sorry, wait, I can fix it.
In an attempt to atone, Star hits Steven's area with another magic beam, only to blow it up and send him flying. Steven lands in front of Star, the sand following suit. He angrily launches the sand off, pushing Star back.
Steven: Okay, I think I have a better idea.
Steven walks up to the obliviously smiling Star and lifts her over his shoulders. After a few more steps, he sets her down, giving the message that he wants to be left alone. Star, unperturbed, continues her efforts.
Star: Wow, grumpy much. I'll cheer you up! Cupcake Blast!
Star fires a Cupcake Blast at Steven with his back turned. Noticing just in time, he blocks the assault with his mother's shield before proceeding to jump up high and float above his opponent.
Steven: Um, stop please?
Steven throws his shield, which Star narrowly dodges. She casts a spell, creating a rainbow bridge for her to get on Steven's level. She fires a Dagger Heart Blast, forcing Steven to surround himself in a bubble. He is pushed back violently into a hill from the force, and tumbles to the ground, ruining a few sand sculptures on the way.
Star begins repeatedly shooting lasers at the ground. Steven manages to avoid them as the magic destroys more of the sand castles. He leaps up and covers his hands in his pink bubble boxing gloves.
Steven: What did sand castles ever do to you?!
Star: Hmmm, I dunno!
Steven breaks through the rainbow and knocks Star on her back. He manages to land a few punches on her and nearly knocks her off the rainbow. She uses her wand to activate Starfish Tsunami, summoning a wave to knock her opponent down on the beach. As Steven recovers and spits out a starfish, he notices Watermelon Stevens popping out of the sand.
Steven: It's alright, take your time.
Star: Hey, check this out!
Star uses her Bunny Rabbit Blast to advance in the air as she shoots a horde of narwhals at her foe. Steven creates a large shield that deflects the creatures before tossing it at Star, sending her crashing into a nearby sand castle.
Star: Ow...
Star suddenly begins glowing and transforms into her Ultimate Magic Butterfly form.
Star: That was RUDE!!
The golden Star uses her wand to summon a Warnicorn Stampede. Steven, now afraid and anguished at the site, begins to glow pink.
Steven: What's wrong with you?! Just... leave me... AALOOOOONNNE!!!
Steven's jacket rips off as he transforms into his larger Pink State. He starts sadistically giggling as the Watermelon Stevens also grow larger and start ambushing the warnicorns, which are being led by Spider with a Top Hat.
Spider with a Top Hat: WAAAAAR CRYYYYYYYYYY!!
The Watermelon Stevens get into an all-out brawl with the unicorns and the Spider. Steven tosses one of the warnicorns aside before leaping up, where he is confronted by Star.
Star: See ya later, pinkie!
As Star tries to fire a Thermonuclear Butterfly Blast, time begins to slow down for Steven, allowing him to form a spiked bubble to protect himself and deflect the attack.
Star: Oooooo~ that's neat!
The angered Steven charges forward and augments the size of his right arm to punch Star downwards before firing two hexagons to push her into the sand. He then forms a full pink dome around Star and the armies on the beach.
Steven: Goodbye, weird bug girl!
He begins to shrink the dome to crush everyone inside. Star tries to fire a beam from her wand to break through the dome, but it proves strong enough to deflect her attack. Steven summons a bubble around Star's wand and teleports it away from her. Star begins crying, seemingly having no options to defend herself.
Spider with a Top Hat: NEVER SURRENDER!
Now inspired and determined, Star puts all six of her hands together and begins to concentrate and "dip down". Laser pointers suddenly begins appearing on the ground. She unleashes her Mega-Explosive Crystal Laser, which disintegrates all the warnicorns, woodland creatures, and Watermelon Stevens contained within the dome. The large beams then begin to tear down the dome itself from multiple directions. Before Steven can react, he is hit with one of the beams and screams as his body is annihilated and his gem shatters in two.
Star stands alone on the burning beach filled with corpses of warnicorns, woodland creatures, and Watermelon Stevens. Steven's shattered pink gem lies beside her and loses its glow. Suddenly, the first place ribbon that was awarded to the best sand castle in the contest lands in her hair.
Star: Oh my gosh... I WON!!
Star smiles and creates a rainbow above her as she poses for her victory.

We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.
Boomstick: I... don't think she won what she thought she won there. Steven definitely had a better sand castle!
Wiz: With Steven's strength and healing abilities, Star was definitely between a Gem and a hard place initially, and when Steven went Pink made it a whole lot tougher on her.
Boomstick: And since Steven was an alien Gem and not technically magic, Star's Whispering Spell couldn't touch him. But she still had the advantage in the end.
We cut to the post-analysis.
Boomstick: Steven was physically superior, at least to Star's everyday appearance; Star can survive explosions worth a few dozen tons of TNT, but he could match Garnet's mountain-busting might.
Wiz: However, everyone knows this matchup would rarely ever resolve in fisticuffs. Even with how out there some of Steven's powers were, the sheer versatility of Star's magic was simply not something he was equipped to outmaneuver or overpower.
Boomstick: Sure, his laser feats mean he was faster than Star and her lightning feats, but Star's Butterfly form and transportation magic meant she had plenty of ways to work around that. Not to mention, she mastered her superpowered bug form, while Steven never mastered Pink State. And she didn't even need her wand to go full power, so disarming her meant jack-squat.
Wiz: It is possible Steven can match the power of the Diamond trio, since Pink Diamond was able to defend against them alone. 843 million tenajoules, or about two tenatons of TNT, is certainly nothing to scoff at.
Boomstick: But Star had spells that could destroy a whole planet, and probably even a universe! Pun intended. She could basically one-up any level of power Steven tried to throw at her, even if he did go full pink monster mode.
We cut to Wiz and Boomstick.
Wiz: Steven was pushed to the limit and gave it his best, but Star's raw power and her versatile spell-casting were impossible to beat.
Boomstick: Butter-fly on home, Star. You've had a "Gem-uine" win.
We cut to the "Winner" card.
Wiz: The winner is Star Butterfly.

The track for this fight is "Stars of the Universe" by Therewolf Media. It is a lighthearted track that highlights both combatants' childlike natures and mystical qualities before it ramps up in intensity as their battle gets deadlier, with a magical synthesizer sound effect at the very end that signifies Star's victory over Steven. There are also hints of the Steven Universe theme song in the beginning of the track, as well as elements of "Wand Fight (By the Book)" from Star vs. the Forces of Evil.

Trivia
Production
- The connections between Steven and Star are that they are both kind-hearted, optimistic, and friendly (yet short-tempered) cartoon children from the 2010s with extraterrestrial powers akin to magic. Both are of unique, royal, alien births (Steven is the hybrid child of Greg Universe, who is a human, and Rose Quartz, who is a Gem part of the Great Diamond Authority, while Star was born to the Mewman monarchs River Butterfly, who is a king of the barbaric Johansen family, and Moon Butterfly, who is a queen of the classy Butterfly family), and wield weapons passed down by their mothers (Rose Quartz's shield and the Royal Magic Wand, respectively) while inheriting their father's pastimes (Steven loves music and Star has a passion for bashing monsters). Both use their powers to protect Earth and its citizens from monsters and other evil invaders alongside their friends, including their best friends turned love-interests (Connie Maheswaran and Marco Diaz, respectively), but after learning about the past of the monsters they fight, it became their new goal to unite two races (Humans and Gems, and Mewmans and Monsters, respectively). Additionally, both are determined to right the wrongs of their pasts and the mistakes made by their mothers (Rose Quartz and Moon Butterfly, respectively).
- Prior to release, the YouTube upload of the fight was titled "Steven Universe VS Star Butterfly (Crystal Gems VS Star vs. the Forces of Evil)", designating Steven under his team rather than his home series, presumably to avoid redundancy (as "Steven Universe" is the name of both the show and its main character). By the time of its release, the episode title was changed to simply have the combatants' names, with no parenthesis afterwards.
- The thumbnail for this episode uses an uncredited fan render of Steven by TheOffColors on the Steven Universe Wiki.
- This makes it the 18th episode where at least one of its thumbnails uses fan art, after Zitz VS Leonardo, Kratos VS Spawn, Bomberman VS Dig Dug, Vegeta VS Shadow, Chun-Li VS Mai Shiranui, Ivy VS Orchid, Fulgore VS Sektor, Godzilla VS Gamera, Deadpool VS Pinkie Pie, Lucario VS Renamon, Raven VS Twilight Sparkle, Leon Kennedy VS Frank West, Nightwing VS Daredevil, All Might VS Might Guy, Black Canary VS Sindel, Beerus VS Sailor Galaxia, and Blake VS Mikasa, and with the next three being Sauron VS Lich King, Frieza VS Megatron, and Rick Sanchez VS The Doctor.
Easter Eggs
- The grand prize of the sandcastle contest being $650 is a reference to the amount of money that Marco usually has with him from monthly royalty checks.
- The winning sandcastle of the contest is that of the Kanezaka map from Overwatch.
- Death Battle community members Redrunner and GumballViking can be seen on/as the sandcastles Steven tumbles over.
- This is the first episode to feature the two as cameos, with the next two being Bill Cipher VS Discord and Rick Sanchez VS The Doctor.
- A star-shaped iris closes in on Star at the end of the fight, similar to the ones at the end of most Steven Universe episodes.
Errors
- During Steven's analysis, Boomstick states that Steven revived Jasper with his tears, when he actually revived her via a concoction of Steven's, Yellow, Blue, and White Diamond's bodily fluids.
- During Star's hand-drawn transformation sequence, she can be seen with a line nose, which is inconsistent with her triangular one seen in her show and in her sprite.
Other
- This is the fifth Cartoon-themed episode, after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Battle Royale, Starscream VS Rainbow Dash, He-Man VS Lion-O, and Danny Phantom VS American Dragon Jake Long, and with the next four being SpongeBob VS Aquaman, Bill Cipher VS Discord, Scooby-Doo VS Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Wile E. Coyote VS Tom Cat.
