Sun Wukong is a Chinese mythological figure and the main protagonist of the Journey to the West series.[Note 1] He appeared in the 162nd episode of Death Battle, Hercules VS Sun Wukong, where he fought against Heracles from Greek and Roman mythology.
History
Long ago, a stone monkey was born from a magic rock on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, and subsequently became king of the monkeys through a test of bravery. The Monkey King later sailed the world searching for the secret to eternal life, eventually becoming a disciple of the Buddho-Daoist sage, Patriarch Subodhi, who gave him the name "Sun Wukong" (孫悟空, "Monkey Awakened to Emptiness"). However, the sage's teachings were not enough for Wukong, and he constantly yearned for more, from freedom from death to a home among the heavens, all to the point that he sought to become a god himself. The gods were not pleased and sought to try and teach the Monkey King humility, to little avail, eventually leading to a great battle with Heaven. Seemingly unbeatable, the Jade Emperor called on the Buddha to end his rampage, imprisoning the Monkey King beneath a magic mountain to reflect on his actions. Centuries later, Wukong was offered freedom in exchange for protecting the monk Tang Sanzang on his quest to collect the Buddhist sutras. Along the way, he and his religious brothers Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing fought untold numbers of ghosts, monsters, and demons. In the end, Wukong would finally earn his place and achieve Buddhahood.

- Sun Wukong and his opponent are the first and second Mythology characters to appear.
- He is the first Mythology character to win.
- With oral literature about him going back to ca. 1000, Sun Wukong is the second oldest Death Battle combatant only behind his opponent, Heracles.
- Sun Wukong's voice actor, Alex Mai, had previously voiced the Neon Shifter variant of Wukong in SMITE.
